Chapter 32 - The Tell-All Scheme

While our household prepared with dignity and quiet resolve, seventy miles away in Richmond, Eleanor Carter was drowning in the bitter dregs of her own irrelevance.
Her life in the subsidized senior housing facility was an endless parade of monotony and humiliation. Stripped of her country club memberships, her designer wardrobe, and the social circle that once flattered her every whim, Eleanor spent her days stewing over perceived injustices. She blamed everyone except herself: Emily for her unyielding defiance, Alexander for his terrifying authority, Lucas for his perceived betrayal, and Arthur for having the audacity to die and leave her destitute.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Eleanor sat in the public library, staring at an online article in a prominent digital publication called The Capital Observer. The magazine had recently published a viral series on high-profile military and political families.
A desperate, toxic spark ignited in Eleanor’s mind.
She reached out to Darren Cole, a freelance sensationalist journalist known for publishing provocative, unverified exposés on defense officials. Using an old burner phone, Eleanor pitched him an exclusive interview: “The Forgotten Mother: How the Vice Chief of Staff and His Surgeon Wife Cast Aside Their Aging Parents for Power.”
Darren Cole smelled blood in the water. An accusation of filial neglect against a four-star general and a decorated trauma surgeon had the potential to generate millions of clicks. Two days later, Cole met Eleanor at a diner on the outskirts of Richmond, his digital voice recorder placed between two mugs of black coffee.
Eleanor gave the performance of a lifetime. She wept theatrical tears into paper napkins, painting herself as a devoted, loving mother who had worked her fingers to the bone to put Emily through medical school. She claimed that Emily had grown arrogant and ashamed of her modest upbringing, cutting off contact the moment she married high military rank.
"They treat me like garbage, Mr. Cole," Eleanor sobbed, dabbing at her dry eyes. "Emily refused to pay for her father’s heart medication while he lay dying. Her husband threatened to throw me in prison simply because I wanted to see my granddaughter. They live in a historic mansion in Alexandria while I survive on canned soup in a drafty studio. The world thinks Emily Carter is a saint, but behind that pristine uniform is a cold, heartless daughter who abandoned her own flesh and blood."

Darren Cole smiled, snapping his notebook shut. "This is gold, Mrs. Carter. We’re going to run this next week. I just have to file a formal request for comment with the Pentagon press office for legal diligence."
Eleanor left the diner with a triumphant smirk, convinced that public shame would finally bring Emily to her knees, forcing Alexander to pay a quiet financial settlement to protect his career. She had no idea that Darren Cole’s standard legal due diligence was about to open a trapdoor beneath her feet.
