Chapter 14 - The General's Shadow

I was speaking with a senior orthopedic specialist from Bethesda when the sharp click of high heels and the unmistakable scent of heavy floral perfume cut through the ambient jazz music. I turned slightly to see my mother bearing down on me, flanked by Aunt Marlene, their eyes burning with manic indignation.
"Emily!" Eleanor hissed, keeping her voice low but razor-sharp as she stopped two feet from me. "What on earth do you think you are doing here?"
I took a slow sip of sparkling water, regarding her with cool detachment. "Good evening, Eleanor. You look well."
"Don't you take that tone with me, young lady!" Eleanor snapped, her fingers trembling with fury. "This is an elite philanthropic gala for national leaders and high-ranking defense executives. This is not a venue for your pathetic, rebellious theatrics. Who let you in here? Did you sneak past security with some counterfeit pass?"
Lucas stepped forward, placing himself between our mother and me. "Back off, Mom. You have no idea what you're talking about."
"Lucas, stay out of this!" Marlene interjected, her voice shrill with self-righteousness. "Your father is here to close the most important business deal of his life. If Emily starts parading around with her tragic military sob stories, Marcus Sterling will walk away! Emily, leave right now before we have security escort you out into the street!"
"I would be very careful about who you threaten to escort out, Mrs. Carter," a deep, resonant voice boomed from behind them.
The sound carried an unmistakable authority—a baritone that had commanded divisions across two continents.
Eleanor and Marlene froze, the color draining from their faces as they turned around.
Emerging from the private VIP reception corridor was Lieutenant General Alexander Hale.
He wore his full Army Mess Dress uniform—the deep midnight blue jacket adorned with gold braid, miniature medals spanning four tiers, and three brilliant silver stars gleaming on each shoulder epaulet. Flanking him were two full-bird Colonels from the Joint Staff and the Deputy Provost Marshal of the Military District of Washington.
The sheer physical and institutional presence of Alexander silenced the entire perimeter of the ballroom. Guests nearby stopped their conversations, instinctively turning to acknowledge the high-ranking commander.
Alexander didn't look at Arthur, who had just rushed over, sweating profusely. Alexander walked straight toward me, his cold, granite expression softening into warmth the second his eyes met mine. He reached out, his large, warm hand finding the small of my back, drawing me against his side in an unmistakable gesture of possession and protection.
"Forgive me for running late, darling," Alexander said softly, kissing my temple before turning his icy gaze upon Eleanor. "The Secretary of Defense had a few final questions regarding our logistics brief."
Eleanor opened her mouth, but only a dry, choking gasp came out. "General... Hale..."
"Mrs. Carter," Alexander stated, his voice ringing with absolute, unforgiving clarity. "When we last spoke in Virginia, I gave you and your husband a clear directive: Major Carter was never to be harassed or approached by you again. Yet here you stand, creating a public scene and threatening a decorated medical officer at a military charity function."
Arthur pushed his way through, his face pale as chalk. "General! Please! It was a misunderstanding! My wife simply didn't realize Emily was... was invited!"

Before Alexander could reply, a tall, silver-haired gentleman in a bespoke tuxedo stepped out from the VIP circle, his eyes fixed on Alexander with immense respect.
"General Hale," Marcus Sterling said warmly, extending his hand. "We've been waiting for you and Major Carter in the green room. The program is about to begin."
