Chapter 13 - Under the Chandeliers

The night of the National Defense Medical Foundation Gala arrived with unyielding grandeur. The Ronald Reagan Building was bathed in amber uplighting, its soaring glass atrium filled with the quiet murmur of power, philanthropy, and patriotism. Men in tailored black tuxedos and immaculate military mess dress uniforms mingled beneath towering crystal chandeliers, while women in haute couture gowns navigated the polished terrazzo floors.
Arthur Carter adjusted the bow tie of his tuxedo in the grand foyer mirror, his palms sweating. Beside him, Eleanor wore an emerald silk taffeta gown, dripping in family heirlooms, her chin tilted high in a desperate display of defiance. Aunt Marlene fluttered behind them, clutching a designer clutch and scanning the crowd for recognizable faces.
"Remember the plan, Arthur," Eleanor whispered sharply, her eyes darting across the sea of guests. "Marcus Sterling is near the stage. You walk over, introduce yourself as the managing director of Carter Developments, and bring up the land parcel near Dulles. Do not mention Lucas, and do not mention Emily."
"I know what to do, Eleanor," Arthur muttered nervously. "Just keep your voice down. Half the Pentagon is in this room."
Arthur made an initial attempt to approach Marcus Sterling, but the aerospace titan was surrounded by four-star admirals and members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. A private security detail politely steered Arthur toward the outer banquet perimeter, leaving him frustrated and anxious.
As they retreated toward the cocktail terrace, Eleanor suddenly froze. Her gaze locked onto the main entrance, her breath hitching in her throat.
Walking through the brass double doors was a vision that made Eleanor's blood run cold.
It was me.
I wore an off-the-shoulder, floor-length midnight blue gown made of heavy Italian silk. The cut was elegant, commanding, and timeless, perfectly tailored to highlight my posture. Pinned neatly over my left shoulder was a miniature rack of military decorations, anchored by my combat action ribbon and medical insignia. My hair was swept into a polished chignon, and I wore no jewelry other than simple diamond studs and the platinum wedding band Alexander had placed on my finger.
Beside me, walking with calm, predatory grace, was Lucas, looking proud and poised as my escort while Alexander finished an urgent briefing with the Joint Chiefs in the VIP suite.
Eleanor’s shock instantly curdled into volcanic outrage. She grabbed Arthur’s sleeve with such force that her knuckles turned white.
"Arthur! Look!" she hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. "Look at her! She snuck in! She found a way to crash this event just to humiliate us!"
"Emily?" Arthur blinked, his jaw dropping. "How did she get a ticket to a five-thousand-dollar-a-plate charity gala?"
May you like
"She probably begged some low-level staffer!" Marlene sneered, hurrying forward. "Look at her, flaunting those cheap medals like she owns the place. She’s going to ruin everything with Sterling!"
Eleanor gathered her silk skirts and marched across the marble hall, determined to purge her daughter from the room before Arthur’s business could be compromised.
