Chapter 29 - The Courtroom Farce

When narcissism is stripped of its audience and its money, it frequently resorts to the legal system as an instrument of desperate vengeance.

Six months after Victoria was born, Eleanor Carter hit rock bottom. Her retail job at the department store had ended when the chain filed for bankruptcy, and her modest savings were entirely drained. Living in government-subsidized senior housing in Richmond, her mind became utterly warped by grievance and envy.

Through an unscrupulous, low-rent contingency attorney named Harold Fiske, Eleanor filed a sensational civil lawsuit in the Fairfax County Circuit Court. Citing archaic, rarely enforced Virginia filial support statutes and state grandparent visitation provisions, Eleanor demanded $15,000 a month in lifetime parental maintenance from Emily and Lucas, as well as court-mandated, unsupervised weekend visitation rights with Victoria and Leo.

Fiske had tipped off several local sensationalist tabloids, hoping the four-star general’s family would pay a quiet, multi-million-dollar settlement to avoid public embarrassment.

On the morning of the hearing, Eleanor arrived at the Fairfax courthouse wearing a black mourning veil, carrying a battered family photo album, and preparing to deliver an Oscar-worthy performance of an abandoned, grieving widow.

She did not anticipate who was waiting for her inside Courtroom 3B.

Sitting at our defense table was not a stressed, nervous couple ready to negotiate. Sitting beside Alexander and me was Judge Advocate General Colonel Marcus Vance, accompanied by one of the top constitutional litigators in the country. Lucas and Chloe sat calmly in the gallery behind us.

Judge Patricia Holloway, a no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench, adjusted her reading glasses and slammed her gavel down with an echoing crack.

"Mr. Fiske," Judge Holloway began, her voice dripping with undisguised contempt. "I have reviewed your petition on behalf of Mrs. Eleanor Carter. In my three decades on this bench, I have rarely seen a more egregious abuse of the legal process."

Eleanor blinked, her theatrical posture faltering. "Your Honor, if I may speak as a grieving mother—"

"You will remain silent, Mrs. Carter!" Judge Holloway snapped.

Our lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, we have submitted into evidence the full investigative record. Exhibit A: certified photographic evidence and military police reports detailing the petitioner’s intentional destruction of active-duty military uniforms and personal property. Exhibit B: a five-year federal protective order issued by the District of Maryland following petitioner’s harassment and attempted assault at a military medical symposium. Exhibit C: sworn forensic accounting records showing petitioner’s late husband attempted fraudulent embezzlement of Mr. Lucas Carter’s trust funds. And Exhibit D: a notarized deathbed affidavit signed by the late Arthur Carter explicitly stating petitioner is unfit for contact with his grandchildren."

The courtroom went dead silent. Harold Fiske looked at the thick stack of federal documents, his face turning an ash-gray color. He leaned over to Eleanor, whispering furiously under his breath.

Judge Holloway looked down from the bench at Eleanor with absolute, icy disgust.

"Mrs. Carter, filial support statutes exist to protect elderly parents who acted in good faith, not to provide an extortion mechanism for estranged individuals who committed documented felonies against their children. Furthermore, grandparent visitation requires a showing that parental estrangement causes harm to the child. Given your documented history of violent property destruction and obsessive harassment, placing an infant in your presence would be reckless endangerment."

Judge Holloway picked up her pen, scrawling a vicious signature across the case jacket.

"This petition is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, I find this filing completely frivolous and malicious. I am assessing full legal fees and costs totaling forty-two thousand dollars against petitioner Eleanor Carter and her counsel, jointly and severally. And Mrs. Carter, if you ever file another frivolous motion in this commonwealth against these families, I will hold you in criminal contempt and remand you directly to county custody. Court is adjourned."

The gavel slammed down.

Eleanor sank into her chair, her mouth hanging open, tears of pure, impotent rage running down her face as Harold Fiske furiously packed his briefcase and abandoned her at the table.

Her last weapon had shattered in her hands. She was officially, legally, and permanently powerless.
