Chapter 86 - The Ghost on the Wire

The terminal screen cast a sickly crimson glow over the blood-slicked floor of the vault. The countdown was relentless: *00:42... 00:41...*

"Julian," Lorenzo whispered, his voice cracking like dry parchment. His hands trembled as he stepped backward from the console, staring at the camera mounted above the monitor as if staring into the eyes of the devil himself. "You died in Corsica. I saw the body. I burned the ashes myself."

"You burned what I allowed you to burn, Father," the voice purred through the high-grade speakers, crystal clear and utterly devoid of warmth. "You always were blinded by your own arrogance. You thought you could hoard the De Marco consortium's offshore reserves under an acoustic biokey, locking Vincent and me out forever. But you forgot who built the acoustic cipher. I did."

"Julian, stop!" Vincent roared, coughing up a spatter of dark crimson. He pressed a hand against his torn abdomen, his knuckles white against his ruined black shirt. He kept his pistol trained on Lorenzo, but his wild, feverish eyes were locked on the monitor. "Don't touch the Palermo transfer. If you route those accounts through Sub-Sector B, the Central Bank will freeze the syndicate's operational liquidity within minutes. You'll destroy everything!"

"Let it burn, little brother," Julian replied smoothly. "The syndicate was rotted from the day Father took the seat. I don't need the legacy. I only need the capital... and what belongs to me."

The speakers clicked, and then the voice softened into something chillingly intimate. "Elena. I know you're listening."

A sharp, icy shudder ripped down my spine. I squeezed Maya tighter against my chest, tucking her face into the crook of my neck. Her small hands gripped my jacket with trembling force. "Mommy," she whined into my shoulder, muffled and terrified. "Who is that?"

"Shh, baby. Close your eyes. Keep them closed," I whispered into her hair, my voice shaking despite every ounce of willpower I possessed.

"Five years, Elena," Julian's voice continued, mocking in its gentle cadence. "You kept her safe, just as I arranged through that pathetic front agency in Geneva. You fed her, taught her to speak, gave her that sweet, innocent life away from our father's butchers. I owe you a debt of gratitude. But playtime is over. Vincent was never meant to find you at the airport. That was an unforeseen complication. Now... hand her over to my extraction team waiting outside the villa gates, or the vault's blast doors will seal in thirty seconds. And neither you nor Vincent will ever see daylight again."

*00:28... 00:27...*

"He's bluffing," Vincent snarled through gritted teeth. He stumbled toward the console, shoving his father violently aside. Lorenzo collapsed against the wall, a hollow shell of the ruthless tyrant he had been only an hour ago. Vincent's bloodied fingers flew across the keyboard, desperately trying to bypass the lockdown sequence. "Access denied. Dammit! Julian rewrote the firmware!"

"He's not bluffing, Vincent!" I yelled, scrambling out from under the heavy granite table, dragging Maya with me. "Look at the pneumatic overrides! The hydraulic seals are engaging!"

Heavy clanks echoed through the subterranean chamber as five-inch steel deadbolts began sliding into the floor jambs of the vault exit.

"Run!" Vincent barked, lunging toward us. He caught me by the arm, half-dragging, half-carrying us toward the narrowing threshold.

Lorenzo scrambled from the floor, his eyes wild. "Vincent! Don't leave me! I am your father!"

Vincent didn't even look back. With his remaining strength, he hurled Maya and me through the gap just as the inner blast door dropped three inches. He threw his own battered body through the opening, rolling hard onto the stone corridor outside.

Behind us, Lorenzo lunged for the door, screaming Vincent's name, but the steel slab slammed into the granite floor with a deafening, final thud.

The locking bolts engaged with a hydraulic hiss. The patriarch of the De Marco family was sealed inside his own tomb.

Vincent lay on his back on the cold stone, chest heaving violently, blood pooling beneath his side. He looked up at me through sweat-stung eyes, his jaw clenched against agony.

"He's alive, Elena," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling with a terror I had never heard in him before. "My brother is coming. And he will tear this country apart to take Maya."
