Chapter 52 - The Shattered Council

The Grand Hall was suffocatingly quiet. Even the mechanical hum of the Swiss terminal seemed to dim as Antonio’s threat settled over us.

"What trigger file?" Vincent demanded, easing his grip just enough to allow Antonio a ragged breath, but keeping him pinned against the bronze table.

Antonio coughed, a wet, rattling sound, and managed a broken, bloody grin. "Did you really think I didn't plan for the day Cesare's ghost returned to haunt me? The moment my biometric pulse stops... or if I am held captive past midnight... Maya’s biometric signature and current coordinate grid are transmitted to the Santoro cartel."

My blood ran cold. The Santoros were the blood rivals of the Morettis—ruthless, unchecked, and desperate to extinguish Vincent's line forever.

"You traded your own blood to the wolves?" I yelled, unable to keep silent any longer. I stepped forward, Maya clinging to my sweater like a lifeline. "She’s a child! She carries your family's name!"

Antonio glanced at me, his eyes venomous. "She carries the blood of a dead man who tried to strip us of our empire. She is nothing but leverage."

Capo Salvatore stepped between Vincent and Antonio, raising a heavy palm. "Stand down, Vincent. As much as it sickens me, he isn't bluffing. Antonio has held private contacts in Naples and South America for years. If the Santoros learn the girl is the sole key to the Moretti inheritance, every mercenary from Milan to Reggio Calabria will be hunting her before dawn."

"So what do you propose, Salvatore?" Vincent growled, his dark eyes burning with barely restrained violence. "We bow to a traitor?"

"No," Salvatore said coldly. "We strip him of his rank. The Council revokes Antonio Moretti's title and seat, effective immediately. But we keep him alive in the vault until our cyber technicians can isolate and dismantle the dead-man switch."

The other Capos nodded in grim unison. The balance of power had shifted irrevocably. Antonio had lost the syndicate, but he had bought himself hours of breath.

Two syndicate enforcers stepped forward, locking Antonio in heavy titanium restraints. As they dragged him toward the heavy iron doors leading to the subterranean holding cells, Antonio looked back at me, his gaze lingering on Maya.

"Enjoy your little victory, Elena," Antonio sneered, wiping spit from his chin. "You kept her safe in hiding for five years. But in this house? The walls themselves have teeth."
