Chapter 38 - The Ledger of Chains

The steel safety-deposit box was heavy, lined with dark velvet. Inside lay a thick leather binder bound with red wax seals, alongside an encrypted external hard drive.

I flipped open the binder.

Page after page contained names, account numbers, and explicit wire transfers detailing the systematic bribery of judges, family court commissioners, police chiefs, and state senators. But nestled at the very back of the binder was a single, aged document that made my breath catch in my throat.

It was an adoption waiver and inheritance covenant dated five years ago.

Signed by Vincent Moretti.

My eyes scanned the legal prose, my vision blurring as the words burned into my consciousness.

*In the event of my death or permanent incapacitation, full executive custody and unconditional sole ownership of the Moretti Trust shall transfer irrevocably to Claire Elizabeth Montgomery, as the sole recognized matriarch and legal guardian of Maya Moretti.*

Attached to the document was an official declaration of marriage.

Signed. Sealed. Dated the exact night I had fled his penthouse five years ago.

"Vincent..." I choked out over the comms, my fingers trembling against the parchment. "You married me?"

A heavy, painful silence hung over the line. When Vincent spoke, all the cold authority was gone, replaced by the broken boy who had let me run to save my life.

"You wouldn't have survived the Syndicate after what my family did to yours," he said quietly. "If you stayed with me, my rivals would have used you to bleed me dry. But if you were legally my wife, the bylaws of the Commission protected you from open execution. Even in hiding, you were untouchable if they ever found you."

"You made me the head of the empire if you died," I whispered, tears spilling hot down my cheeks. "Five years ago. Before you even knew Maya was sick."

"I knew she was mine the second you left," he said softly. "And everything I built, everything I killed for, belonged to you both. I never abandoned you, Claire. I was building a cage strong enough to keep the wolves away."

Before I could answer, a frantic voice cut over the frequency.

"Boss! Boss, come in!" Marco screamed into the channel, the deafening rattle of automatic gunfire erupting in the background. "They hit the hospital! Dante bypassed the marshals! He’s storming the pediatric ward with twenty men!"

My blood turned to liquid nitrogen.

"Maya," I screamed.

May you like

"Claire, get to the street!" Vincent ordered, tires screaming in the background as the command van accelerated violently. "We're two minutes away! We're coming for our daughter!"
