Chapter 54 - The Shadow Syndicate

Vincent grabbed the tablet immediately, his thumb sliding across the biometric authenticator. The encrypted partition unlocked, projecting a cascade of financial manifests, property deeds, and high-frequency communication logs onto the wall monitor.

I shifted Maya gently into a lying position, wrapping a cashmere throw blanket around her as she drifted into an exhausted sleep. Then, I stood up and joined Vincent at the screen.

"Look at the dates," I murmured, pointing to the transaction history. "These accounts weren't accessed twenty-five years ago. Some of them were active six months ago."

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Cesare was killed in 1999. Antonio’s name isn't on these signatures. Neither is mine."

"Then who has the administrative override?"

Vincent swiped through the bank registries. "The trust was established to channel seventy percent of the Moretti overseas revenue into an offshore reserve in the Cayman Islands, managed by a holding company called *Aegis Holdings*."

"Aegis," I repeated, a knot tightening in my stomach. "Vincent... when Maya was three months old, before I fled the safehouse in Florence, an anonymous courier delivered a forged passport and ten thousand euros in cash to my doorstep. The return address was listed as Aegis Consulting in Geneva."

Vincent whipped his head toward me, shock flashing across his dark features. "You never told me that."

"I didn't know who you were back then!" I snapped defensively. "I was terrified! Maya’s biological mother died giving birth to her, leaving her in my arms, whispering that the Moretti family would butcher the child if they ever found her! Then an envelope shows up with money and escape documents. I didn't ask questions—I took the baby and ran!"

Vincent closed his eyes, exhaling a ragged breath. "Maya’s mother, Sofia... she was an archivist for the Commission. She discovered Antonio was embezzling billions through black-market shipping lanes. Antonio murdered her and staged it as a post-partum hemorrhage. But Sofia must have found this file first."

"Which means someone else knew," I realized, the puzzle pieces clicking into place. "Someone inside the organization helped Sofia, helped me escape, and has been feeding money into the trust to keep Maya off the grid."

Vincent scrolled down to the bottom of the Aegis manifest, where the beneficial owner's name was redacted beneath a military-grade cipher.

"Salvatore," Vincent muttered, his voice dropping into cold suspicion. "Salvatore was my father’s closest confidant. He supported my claim tonight, but he also pushed to keep Antonio alive."

"Or," I said, pointing at the bottom of the digital page where a secondary signature lay pending, "someone who wanted both you and Antonio out of the way so they could control Maya—and the entire family fortune—themselves."
