Chapter 39 - The Man with the Oxygen Tank

The old abandoned county clinic loomed at the edge of the creek valley like an iron tombstone. Condemned fifteen years ago, its boarded-up windows and cracked brick facade were swallowed by ivy and rot.

Daniel kicked open the rusted basement fire door, shoving Claire and Lily inside before slamming the heavy iron bar into place across the frame.

They were inside the subterranean wards—the very facility where Daniel had been stolen thirty-four years ago. The air was thick with the suffocating stench of mold, stagnant water, and decaying asbestos. Old gurneys with rusted wheels lined the peeling corridors like skeletal sentinels.

"Daniel, there's no way out," Claire gasped, collapsing onto the concrete floor of the old pediatric wing. She was shivering uncontrollably, her lips turning a faint, terrifying shade of blue.

Lily was trembling in her arms, crying softly. "Mommy, I'm cold. Mommy, please, I want to go home."

"I know, baby. I know," Claire wept, pulling her wet coat around the child.

Daniel moved with cold, mechanical precision. He checked the magazine of Miller’s AR-15. Eleven rounds left. No extra magazines. He checked his pockets: one flare stick, a pocket knife, and Box Zero’s steel documents.

Suddenly, the heavy iron basement door shuddered.

*BOOM.*

A hydraulic ram slammed against the steel from the outside. The bolts groaned in the crumbling brickwork.

*BOOM.*

"They're breaching," Daniel said, his voice eerily calm. He knelt down before Claire. He cupped her freezing face in his bruised, bloody hands and pressed his forehead against hers. "Listen to me, Claire. Behind that linen closet is an old laundry chute that leads up to the roof access. It's too narrow for a grown man, but you and Lily can fit. Climb it. Get to the roof. The fire escape on the north side leads down to the state highway."

"I am not leaving you," Claire cried, her voice cracking. "Daniel, he will kill you!"

"He’s been trying to kill me since the day I was born," Daniel whispered, kissing her lips with desperate, fiery passion. "Now take Lily and climb. Don't look back. If you hear shooting... keep running until you see the flashing lights of the state police."

"Daddy!" Lily reached for him, her tiny arms wrapping around his neck.

Daniel pulled her close, burying his face in her hair for what he knew might be the last time. "Be brave, my sweet girl. Daddy’s going to turn the monsters away."

He placed her in Claire’s arms and shoved them toward the laundry chute. Claire gave him one final, devastating look of agony and love, then hoisted Lily into the dark metal shaft, disappearing into the vertical shadows.

Daniel turned back to the corridor.

The heavy basement doors tore off their hinges with a shriek of twisted metal.

Through the dust and rain strode four mercenaries with tactical shotguns, flanking an motorized, tracks-equipped wheelchair carrying Arthur Vance. The old man was hunched forward, clutching a glass tank of liquid oxygen, his breathing tubes whistling like a dying tea kettle.

"Danny," Arthur whispered, his hollow eyes gleaming with psychotic triumph. "The prodigal son."
