Chapter 37 - The Truth Behind Daniel’s Name

They fled downhill through the raging undergrowth, branches whipping their faces, thorns tearing through their clothes. The mud was a treacherous slide of rotting leaves and shale, threatening to pitch them over the ravines with every desperate stride.

Daniel carried Lily strapped against his chest with his coat, holding her head down against his shoulder, whispering non-stop promises into her damp curls.

"I've got you, baby. Daddy’s got you. You're safe. You're safe."

Behind them, the high-pitched whine of ATVs pierced the storm. Arthur’s private security detail was entering the tree line. Flashlight beams cut through the canopy like light sabers, fracturing against the rain.

"In here! Under the culvert!" Sheriff Miller hissed, sliding down a steep ten-foot embankment into the swollen bed of Devil’s Creek.

The creek was running fast and brown, churning with white froth. Beneath the old logging road sat a massive corrugated steel culvert pipe, three feet in diameter, dry enough at the top rim to offer temporary shelter.

Miller pushed Claire and Lily in first, then Daniel. Miller knelt at the entrance, his AR-15 leveled at the ridge above, his breath coming in ragged, wheezing gasps.

Inside the darkness of the pipe, Claire leaned against the curved metal wall, shivering violently from cold and shock. She reached into Daniel’s wet jacket, pulling out the sealed manila envelope they had snatched from Box Zero before the shootout.

"What else is in here, Daniel?" she sobbed silently, her teeth chattering. "Tell me. If we're going to die out here tonight, I want to know who my husband really is!"

Daniel took the waterproof flashlight from his pocket, shielding the lens with his fingers so only a thin red glow illuminated the envelope. He pulled out the final document—a document sealed with red wax, dated October 14, 1989.

It was an adoption decree. But not an ordinary one.

"Daniel..." Claire read over his shoulder, her eyes widening in disbelief. "This isn't an adoption. This is a black-market custody assignment."

Daniel read the names in the dim light, his heart turning to stone.

He was not Arthur and Margaret Vance’s biological son.

Thirty-four years ago, Arthur Vance had operated a private fertility and pediatric research wing in the old county clinic. A young, unwed mother had given birth to a boy with a unique immunological profile. Arthur and Margaret had falsified the infant’s death certificate, issued twenty thousand dollars to the grieving teenage mother, and taken the boy into their mansion to be raised as their heir—a genetic insurance policy.

Daniel was the prototype.

"I wasn't their son," Daniel whispered, tears streaming freely down his mud-covered cheeks. "I was their first experiment. Margaret kept me alive because my blood stabilized Arthur during his first lung surgery in 1992. That's why I have that surgical scar on my lower back... they told me it was a childhood kidney infection."

"My God," Claire whispered, covering her mouth. "They didn't just target Lily. They built your whole life, Daniel. They matched you with me because my family had no living relatives, no money to fight them, and a compatible genetic background."

"No," Daniel snarled, a wave of primal fury surging through his veins, burning away the cold, burning away the fear. "No. Claire, listen to me. They didn't build our love. They didn't build the way I look at you. They didn't build the day Lily held my finger in the hospital room! That belongs to us! That is ours!"

Suddenly, a heavy thud landed on the road directly above the culvert.

The sound of footsteps crunched on the gravel overhead.

Then came the slow, deliberate tapping of a metal ring against a steel walking stick.
