Chapter 18 - THE CUT WIRES AND THE SILENT ALARM

The interrogation room at the county jail smelled of sour coffee, floor wax, and damp wool.
Margaret Vance sat behind the stainless steel table, handcuffed to an iron ring welded into the center of the metal slab. She was stripped of her tailored suits, her diamond earrings, her carefully sculpted silver hair. She wore an orange institutional jumpsuit three sizes too large, her frail, paper-thin skin hanging from her cheekbones like wet parchment.
Yet when the heavy steel door opened and Claire walked in—alone, leaving Daniel in the observation room behind the two-way glass—Margaret’s eyes flickered with that same venomous, aristocratic contempt that had haunted Claire for eight years.
"You look tired, Claire," Margaret rasped. Her voice sounded like dry leaves scraping over concrete. "Motherhood doesn't suit your complexion when things fall apart."
Claire sat down across from her. She didn't blink. She didn't adjust her chair. Her eyes were flat, lethal, stripped of every shred of human deference.
"Julian is coming for Daniel," Claire said. Not a question. A statement of fact.
Margaret chuckled, a dry, rattling cough that shook her frail shoulders. "Julian was always the broken one. Just like his father. Too much conscience. Too much crying. When Richard found out about the offshore transfers, he threatened to take my boys and leave me with nothing. Nothing! After everything I sacrificed to build the Vance name in this state."
"So you cut the brakes," Claire said coldly.
"Richard took the car that night," Margaret whispered, her lips curling into a triumphant, grotesque sneer. "He thought he was driving to the state attorney’s office in Albany. But Julian saw me in the garage. Julian was twelve years old, hiding behind the snowblower, watching his mother with a wrench."
Behind the glass, Claire could hear the faint, muffled thud of Daniel slamming his hands against the wall.
"You blamed Julian," Claire said.
"Of course I did!" Margaret snapped, rattling her handcuffs against the steel table. "A mother must protect her household! I told Julian that if he spoke a word to the police, I would tell them Daniel loosened the bolts. I told him Daniel’s fingerprints were all over the socket wrench. Julian loved his little brother. He loved him so much he took the fall. He spent twenty-two years in a locked ward, convinced he was protecting Daniel from prison!"
"And what happens now, Margaret?" Claire leaned forward, her voice dropping into a register that made the old woman’s smile falter. "What happens now that Julian knows Daniel was never in danger? What happens now that he knows you stole his entire life to protect your money?"
Margaret’s gaze suddenly shifted toward the high, barred window of the cell, where the storm raged against the reinforced glass.
"Julian isn't coming for me, Claire," Margaret whispered, and for the first time in her life, true, unadulterated terror bled through the old woman’s eyes. "Julian knows I am already dead. Julian is going to the house. He is going to the room where Daniel sleeps. Because Julian believes that if Daniel hadn't been born, Richard would still be alive—and he wants to show Daniel what twenty-two years of silence feels like."
At that exact moment, Claire’s cell phone buzzed violently on the metal table.
It was Rachel.
Claire answered on speaker.
*"Claire! The power just went out on our entire street! The backup generator at your house clicked on, but the line went dead five seconds later! Someone cut the hardwired security feed from the pole outside!"*
Claire stood up so fast her chair screeched against the concrete. "Where are the deputies?!"
May you like
*"They’re unconscious on the front lawn, Claire! Someone threw tear gas into their patrol car! Daniel... Julian is inside your house!"*
