Chapter 26 - THE POISON IN THE WATER

The kitchen phone went dead with a click.
Then, from the upstairs bathroom pipes, a violent shudder vibrated through the drywall. A deep, groaning metallic clang reverberated through the ceiling, followed by the sound of water gushing furiously from the taps.
"Lily’s sink," Claire gasped.
She ran toward the stairs, Daniel and Julian hot on her heels. They reached the upstairs landing just as a dark, rust-colored sludge began pouring out from under the bathroom door, soaking into the hall runner carpet.
Daniel kicked the door open.
The sink was overflowing with thick, blackish-brown water that smelled sulfurous and foul. But it wasn't sewage. Floating in the basin, bobbing against the drain stopper, were dozens of small, prescription-grade blister packs—empty, dissolved, their foil backings shredded.
"Arsenic trioxide," Julian whispered from the doorway, his eyes fixed on the swirling water. "That's what she used on Arthur. She didn't shoot him. She put it in his well-water filter day after day until his kidneys shut down. That's why he couldn't run when she came down with the shovel."
Claire grabbed Lily, checking her hands, her face, her mouth. "Lily, did you drink the water from the sink today? Look at Mommy! Did you drink anything from this bathroom?"
Lily’s lip trembled. She began to cry, clinging to Claire’s neck. "Daddy made my juice with the tap water this morning... before he went to the hardware store."
Claire looked up at Daniel, her gaze filled with an accusation so sharp it stripped away the last shreds of his sanity.
"I didn't know!" Daniel screamed, clawing at his own face, sinking to his knees on the wet bathroom tiles. "I swear on my soul, Claire, I didn't know the cistern was contaminated! Mother had maintenance keys to the well house! She told me she hired a plumber last month to service the filters!"
"She didn't hire a plumber," Claire said, her voice turning dead and dangerously quiet. "She poisoned our house to force us out, or to make us desperate enough to find what was buried beneath the floorboards."
A heavy thud rattled the front of the house downstairs. Then another.
