Chapter 24 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE NURSERY CLOSET

Claire snatched the receiver from Daniel’s paralyzed grip before he could protest. She didn't hesitate. She didn't tremble. Every drop of fear in her veins had transmuted into an incandescent, lethal protective fury.

"Listen to me, you miserable old monster," Claire said, her voice deadly low. "If you think you have any leverage here, you are out of your mind. I have Lily. I have the ring. And I have the memory card your husband hid before you buried him."

On the other end of the line, Margaret’s breathing hitched. For the first time, the matriarch’s composure cracked.

"You don't know what's on that card, Claire," Margaret hissed. "You think you're exposing an old murder? If those files are uploaded, Daniel goes to prison with me."

Claire turned her gaze toward Daniel. He was standing beneath the kitchen lights, his face pale as chalk, his eyes fixed on the floor, unable to meet her gaze.

"What is she talking about, Daniel?" Claire asked, holding the receiver between them so he could hear.

"Ask him about the night of August 14th, 1994," Margaret whispered, her tone dripping with poisoned triumph. "Ask your precious husband who held the flashlight while Julian mixed the quicklime. Ask him who signed the withdrawal slips at the harbor bank the next morning using Arthur's forged signature. You married an accomplice, Claire. Daniel didn't forget the trauma. He buried it because he knew he was just as guilty as I was."

Claire felt the ground drop out from beneath her soul. She lowered the phone.

"Daniel?" she breathed.

The silence that answered her was heavier than the storm outside. Daniel covered his face with his trembling hands. He didn't deny it. He didn't scream. He simply sank onto the kitchen counter, his shoulders hitching in silent, broken sobs.

"I was seventeen, Claire," Daniel wept, his voice muffled by his hands. "She told me Father had attacked her. She had bruises on her neck. She told me if the police came, they would take Julian and me away to state facilities and she would go to the electric chair. She said we had to protect the family. She made me... she made me carry the bags of cement down the cellar stairs."

"And you brought our daughter here?" Claire whispered, her voice shaking with disgust. "You brought Lily to sleep above the grave you helped your mother dig?"

Before Daniel could answer, a thunderous crash erupted from the back of the house.

The glass doors leading to the sunroom shattered inward with the violence of a cannon shot. Muddy boots crunched over broken glass, and through the hallway came Julian—covered in black soil, his clothes soaked, his eyes gleaming with mad purpose.

In his left hand, he held a rusted iron lockbox covered in river mud. In his right, he carried a heavy carpenter's crowbar.

"The box is out, Danny," Julian announced with a wild, triumphant grin. "Now we just have to pay the collector waiting outside the gate."
