Chapter 35 - The Judas Transmission

Daniel’s grip on the satellite phone tightened until the plastic casing creaked under the strain. "You have thirty seconds to tell me why I shouldn't hunt you down and tear your throat out with my bare hands, Vanessa."

"Because if you hang up, the tactical teams currently staging at the Fulton Street vent shafts will drop aerosolized neurotoxin into the Lower Manhattan drainage grid," Vanessa replied without a second's hesitation. Her tone was that of a board chairman reviewing quarterly revenue figures. "The Council doesn't care about collateral damage, Daniel. They will kill five hundred MTA maintenance workers just to flush you out of the pipes."

"You don't have the stomach for that," Daniel countered, his eyes locked on the surveillance feeds Arthur was cycling through on the monitors. "You're a corporate parasite. You hide behind contracts and non-disclosure agreements."

A cold, faint laugh escaped her lips on the other end of the line. "You really know nothing about the woman you shared a bed with for three years, do you? Charles didn't hire me to manage his paperwork, Daniel. He hired me to be his executioner when his own conscience failed him. I am the one who drafted the contingency orders for Eleanor’s extraction. I am the one who authorized the Omega-Zero protocol."

Margaret stepped forward, her face inches from the phone’s microphone. "You're lying, Vanessa," Margaret said, her voice cutting through the speaker with terrifying authority. "If you had the power to order our deaths, you wouldn't be calling a dead man's satellite burner. You called because Charles left something behind that you can't reach without Daniel."

The line went silent for three long, agonizing seconds.

When Vanessa spoke again, the professional composure had frayed slightly at the edges, revealing the razor-sharp desperation beneath.

"The second envelope," Vanessa whispered. "The one Eleanor couldn't find in the Adirondacks. Charles divided the Sovereign Protocol into two halves. Margaret’s signature unlocked the quarantine—which gave me the keys to the domestic assets. But the master decryption key—the one that controls the offshore clearing accounts in Zurich and Singapore—is locked in an analog vault that requires an uncorrupted Sterling blood sample."

"You want my blood?" Daniel sneered. "Come down here and bleed me yourself."

"I don't need to," Vanessa said. "Track 61. Beneath the Waldorf Astoria. The abandoned private presidential platform. Meet me there in forty-five minutes. Alone. If you bring the sample and Charles’s key, I will give you Margaret’s freedom. Real freedom. A clean identity, diplomatic transport to Geneva, and immunity from the federal warrant."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then I release the satellite surveillance photos of your mother’s extraction to the media," Vanessa said coldly. "Except my editors will adjust the frames. The world will see a video of you executing your mother in cold blood in the Maiden Lane vault. You will be hunted down by every police officer in this country like a rabid dog, and Margaret will spend the rest of her natural life in an administrative segregation cell at ADX Florence."

The line clicked dead.

Daniel lowered the phone, his chest heaving, his eyes burning into the screen.

"Track 61 is an absolute kill box," Arthur warned, shaking his white head gravely as he set his double-barreled shotgun on the desk. "FDR used it during the war to smuggle his armored limousine into the hotel basement without the press seeing his wheelchair. There are only two ways in and two ways out. If she has Deep Water snipers set up on the catwalks, you won't make it ten yards onto the platform."

"She’s not bringing snipers," Margaret said quietly, staring at the map of Manhattan pinned to Arthur's wall.

Daniel turned to her. "How can you be sure?"

May you like

"Because Vanessa Cross doesn't share power with mercenaries," Margaret answered, a cold, predatory smile curling the edges of her weathered lips. "She wants that offshore key for herself. If the Council gets it, she becomes obsolete—and Vanessa knows better than anyone what the Council does with obsolete assets. She’s not hunting us for the board, Daniel. She’s staging a coup."
