Chapter 16 - The Red Ledger

Daniel stepped through the threshold, sweeping his flashlight across the hidden room.

It was an intelligence vault. Steel shelving lined the walls, packed with hundreds of audio reel-to-reels, surveillance photographs, and black-bound dossiers. In the center of the room sat a steel desk, upon which lay a single red leather ledger embossed with the seal of the United States Department of Justice.

Daniel approached the desk, his boots echoing hollowly on the concrete floor. He opened the ledger.

Inside were bank transfer routing numbers, dates, and photographic proof of clandestine meetings between Charles Sterling and the highest echelons of the federal government during the height of the Cold War. But as Daniel flipped further, the names changed.

He saw Vanessa’s maiden name. He saw Julian’s secret accounts in Luxembourg.

And then he saw the name: *Christian Cross*.

Daniel read the highlighted paragraph aloud, his voice trembling with shock: "*Operation Iron Veil. Subject: Christian Cross. True parentage: Illegitimate issue of Evelyn Cross and Senator Raymond Vance.*"

Daniel froze. He looked back at his mother. "Vance? Arthur Vance’s father?"

Margaret stepped into the vault, her face bathed in the harsh white beam of Daniel’s flashlight. Her expression was not surprised; it was carved from granite.

"Christian is not Charles’s son," Margaret whispered, her voice chilling Daniel to the core. "Evelyn’s child was fathered by the very man who drafted our family trust. Charles took the boy, gave him an identity in Europe, and used him as leverage to force the Vance family to protect the Sterling empire for four decades."

"Which means," Daniel realized, his heart thumping violently against his ribs, "Christian has no Sterling blood. His entire claim to the voting stock, his entire lawsuit—it's all built on a massive lie."

"And Arthur Vance knows it," Margaret said softly. "Arthur didn't panic in the boardroom today because Christian was Charles’s son. Arthur panicked because his half-brother had returned to cash in on forty years of family blackmail."

Suddenly, the heavy pneumatic door behind them slammed shut.

The lights in the vault flickered on—blinding, harsh halogen tubes.

The security monitor on the wall crackled to life, displaying the snow-covered driveway outside the Lake House. Three black SUVs had boxed in Daniel’s Suburban. Armed men in tactical gear were deploying across the perimeter, assault rifles raised.

And standing in the center of the driveway, his charcoal coat billowing in the mountain wind, was Christian Cross, holding a detonator in his gloved hand.
