Chapter 27 - The Sovereign Trap

Eleanor stepped forward, a triumphant, predatory smirk curling on her lips. She raised her scarred left palm and hovered it over the glass plate of the right-hand console. Daniel stood on the left, holding the two brass cylinders.
"At last," Eleanor whispered, her eyes shining with manic ambition. "The empire returns to its rightful architect."
"Daniel, wait!" Margaret suddenly cried out from behind them.
Daniel paused, his hands an inch from the brass ports. "Ma, we have three minutes. What is it?"
"The scar," Margaret gasped, pointing a shaking finger at Eleanor’s exposed palm under the green LED light. "Look at the scar, Daniel!"
Daniel froze. His tactical eyes instantly locked onto the jagged line running across Eleanor’s hand.
It was a surgical incision, perfectly healed, neat and straight along the skin folds.
Then Daniel looked down at his own left hand. His scar was irregular, star-shaped at the base, the unmistakable result of an explosion, of violent, jagged trauma—the scar he had received when he was eight years old, during the explosion at the Sterling boathouse in Maine.
"You said this scar was genetic," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on Eleanor’s neck stand up. "You said we shared the subterranean vascular matrix from the clinic."
Eleanor didn't move. The triumphant smirk on her face hardened into stone.
"The boathouse," Margaret whispered, stepping forward into the light, her voice gaining strength, stripping away forty years of manufactured timidity. "Charles didn't build the console with *her* blood, Daniel. He built it after the boathouse fire. After he realized Eleanor had sent the mercenaries to kill you when you were a child. Charles rebuilt the entire Sovereign system around the only two people who survived that night: himself... and the woman who threw herself over you to take the shrapnel."
Margaret slowly pulled off her heavy woolen gloves.
Across her right palm was a massive, horrific, star-shaped burn scar—the identical mirror to the mark on Daniel’s hand.
"She isn't here to save the family, Daniel," Margaret said, her voice ringing through the cavernous bunker with absolute, unyielding authority. "She doesn't want to stop the broadcast. She wants to redirect it. The right-hand port isn't a quarantine switch. It’s an upload terminal for the European syndicate."
The grandfather clock mechanism inside the console clicked loudly.
11:57 PM.
Eleanor didn't argue. She didn't deny it.
With blinding, terrifying speed, Eleanor pulled a snub-nosed ceramic revolver from the interior lining of her dress skirt, aiming it directly between Margaret’s eyes.
"You always were a meddlesome, pathetic cow," Eleanor snarled, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into raving madness. "You stole my life! You stole my husband! And now you dare stand between me and my empire?"
"Put the gun down, Eleanor," Daniel said, not raising his Glock, his voice colder than the grave.
"Move away from the console, Daniel!" Eleanor screamed, her finger whitening on the double-action trigger. "Step aside and let me engage the upload! If I can't rule the Sterling Trust, I will watch every government from London to Tokyo burn it to the ash heap!"

"You said I had your eyes," Daniel whispered.
*BANG.*
