Chapter 19 - The Trap on Park Avenue

Midnight struck across the bells of Manhattan. A torrential winter thunderstorm had rolled over the island, lashing rain against the towering glass windows of the 740 Park Avenue penthouse. Thunder shook the massive crystal chandeliers, casting jagged, violent shadows across the marble foyer.

Christian Cross arrived alone. He wore an ivory cashmere overcoat, carrying no weapons, flanked by no bodyguards. Arrogance was his armor. He believed Vance’s phone call. He believed Margaret and Daniel were broken, trapped, ready to sign the final unconditional surrender in exchange for a meager pension from their former empire.

He pushed open the double doors of the penthouse with the swagger of a Roman general entering a conquered province.

"I must admit, Margaret," Christian said, stripping off his leather gloves and tossing them onto the antique console table, "you have remarkable resilience for a seventy-year-old woman. Most people of your generation would have had the courtesy to die in the snow."

The living room was dim, lit only by the crackling embers of the great fireplace and the flashes of lightning outside.

Daniel sat in a high-backed leather chair, his hands resting on his knees, his face obscured by the shadows. Margaret stood beside the fireplace, looking down into the flames.

"Where is Vance with the liquidation receipts?" Christian demanded, frowning as the silence stretched unnaturally long. "I have a private jet waiting at Teterboro. The funds clear into Vaduz in forty minutes."

"Arthur won't be joining us, Christian," Margaret said, turning slowly to face him.

Christian’s eyes narrowed. He took half a step back toward the door, his predatory instincts suddenly flaring. "What did you do?"

"Arthur did what cowards always do when the ship begins to sink," Daniel said, his voice rising from the darkness like grinding stones. Daniel stood up, stepping into the firelight. He held a signed, stamped federal subpoena in his right hand. "He turned state’s evidence. In exchange for protective custody, he handed over forty years of your offshore ciphers. The Department of Justice froze the Vaduz accounts fifteen minutes ago."

Christian’s face twisted into an ugly, savage mask. "You lie! That trust was protected by triple-blind Swiss covenants! No federal judge could touch it without—"

"Without the master encryption key," Margaret finished smoothly. She pulled an antique silver locket from her cardigan pocket, letting it dangle from her fingers like a silver pendulum. "The key wasn't in the safety deposit box, Christian. And it wasn't at the Lake House. Charles gave it to me on our wedding day, disguised as a wedding trinket. He knew Evelyn’s son would come one day. And he knew only one person in this world was ruthless enough to destroy him."

Christian’s composure shattered completely. He lunged forward, reaching into his coat for a snub-nosed revolver, his eyes wide with rabid desperation. "Give it to me, you old witch!"

Before Christian’s hand could clear his lapel, Daniel moved with terrifying, explosive speed.

Daniel closed the distance, his left hand parrying Christian’s draw, his right fist driving like a piston into Christian’s jaw. The sound of shattering bone echoed above the thunder. Christian crashed violently onto the marble floor, his revolver skittering across the polished stone into the fireplace.

Daniel stood over him, placing the heavy heel of his tactical boot directly onto Christian’s throat, pressing down until the usurper began to gag, clawing uselessly at Daniel’s pant legs.

Margaret walked over, looking down at the broken man beneath her son's boot.

"You thought you were a Sterling," Margaret whispered, leaning down until her icy breath touched Christian’s bleeding cheek. "You are nothing but the bastard of a corrupt lawyer who died in prison. And tomorrow morning, you will take the cell right next to Julian."

Christian choked out a bloody, wheezing laugh. His swollen, blackened eyes stared up at Margaret with a madness that made the hair on Daniel’s neck stand up.

"You... you think... you won?" Christian wheezed, blood bubbling on his lips. "You stupid... arrogant... old woman..."
