Chapter 22 - The Blood Protocol

"Be quiet, Christian," Eleanor said without looking down. She flicked her cane, driving the platinum tip into Christian’s collarbone with sickening force. The younger man gasped, his eyes rolling back as his consciousness slipped away into the shadows.
Silence descended upon the penthouse, save for the howling gale ripping through the torn curtains.
"Forty-two years ago," Eleanor began, her voice carrying an eerie, hypnotic cadence, "Charles Sterling realized a fatal flaw in the dynasty’s charter. The Sterling Trust could only pass to a male heir born of the direct bloodline. But Charles was sterile. A bout of scarlet fever in his youth left him incapable of siring a child."
Daniel’s grip on the weapon remained rigid, his tactical training screaming at him to secure the room, but his soul was pinned to the floor. "And you?"
"I was his legal wife. His first wife," Eleanor said, her eyes flashing with cold fire. "Not this timid, sanctimonious creature cowering behind you. Margaret was my younger sister, the quiet shadow who lived in our guest house, painting watercolours while Charles and I conquered Wall Street. When Charles realized he could not produce an heir, we made a discreet arrangement in London. High-grade genetic material from our Austrian bloodline. In vitro fertilization. I carried you, Daniel. I bled for thirty-six hours in that private suite while the London rain beat against the glass, just like tonight."
"If you were his mother," Daniel spat, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger slack, "why were you dead? Why was Margaret the only mother I ever knew?"
"Because she tried to murder you, Daniel!" Margaret screamed, lunging forward, her voice breaking into a ragged, guttural shriek. The timid, frail old woman vanished, replaced by a mother defending her cub from a demon. "Tell him the truth, Eleanor! Tell him what you were going to do with him!"
Eleanor’s smile vanished, her aristocratic mask hardening into something ancient and cruel. "I was going to secure the dynasty. The Sovereign Protocol required that the child be raised in isolation, trained under the private military doctrine of the Zurich Trust, devoid of sentimentality, devoid of weakness. But Charles grew soft. He looked at you in that incubator and saw a human being instead of an instrument. And Margaret... pathetic, barren Margaret... looked at you and saw the child God had denied her."
Margaret was sobbing now, clutching Daniel’s tactical vest, her tears soaking into the ballistic nylon. "She wanted to trade you, Daniel. She had a contract drawn up with the European syndicate. She was going to sell your voting rights before your first tooth came in. Charles found the papers. He realized his wife was a psychopath. We took you. We fled back to New York, and Charles staged that crash in the Alps to bury her forever!"
"And yet, Charles forgot the most fundamental law of power," Eleanor said softly, taking another step forward. She ignored the Glock entirely, coming so close that Daniel could smell her perfume—vintage tuberose and cold ozone. "You cannot kill a Sovereign with fire and snow. You merely delay them."
Eleanor reached inside her black cashmere coat. Daniel instantly engaged the trigger wall—a millimetre away from firing.
"Hands where I can see them!" he roared.
Eleanor slowly pulled her hand out. She wasn't holding a weapon.

Between her slender, manicured fingers was an antique brass cylinder, etched with complex cryptographic runes—the twin to the cylinder Daniel had recovered from the Adirondack crypt.
"Your father knew this day would come," Eleanor whispered, her gaze piercing directly into Daniel’s soul. "He gave you the Red Ledger. But without the Sovereign Cipher, the ledger is merely useless numbers. And in thirty minutes, the automated liquidation clause triggers. Every asset, every property, every dollar belonging to the Sterling name will be seized by the European board... unless the true heir and the true matriarch combine their keys."
