Chapter 29 - The Breach at Havencrest

Back at the clinic, the nightmare had already begun.

The power had been cut three minutes ago, plunging the entire private pavilion into pitch-black darkness, punctuated only by the red glow of emergency exit signs.

I was lying in the recovery bed, clutching baby Leo to my chest while Dr. Evans held baby Maya, when the heavy glass entrance doors had shattered under a hail of suppressed gunfire.

Keller’s voice had screamed through the corridor: *"Code Black! Evacuate OR 3!"*

Then came the explosions. Stun grenades rattled the drywall, filling the hallways with thick, acrid white smoke.

I ignored the blinding agony tearing across my fresh c-section incision. The raw, primal instinct of a mother took over. I rolled off the bed, my legs giving out beneath me, crashing onto the cold linoleum.

"Lena!" Dr. Evans gasped, dropping to his knees, handing Maya to me. "You can't walk! Your stitches will rupture!"

"I don't care," I choked out, wrapping both babies inside my hospital gown, binding them against my body with a bedsheet, tying the knot with trembling, bloodied fingers. "Get me a weapon."

"What?!"

"Get me a weapon, Evans! Now!"

The doctor scrambled to Keller’s dropped emergency bag by the door, pulling out a heavy tactical flashlight and a compact 9mm sidearm Keller had left behind. He pressed the gun into my shaking hands.

Outside the room, heavy tactical boots marched down the corridor.

*Thud. Thud. Thud.*

"Clear room one," a muffled, distorted voice spoke through a gas mask. "Target is in room three. Capture the infants alive. Terminate the mother."

Tears streamed silently down my face as I backed into the darkest corner of the recovery suite, hiding behind a heavy steel medical cabinet. My babies were miraculously quiet, sensing the mortal danger, Leo’s tiny mouth pressed against my collarbone.

The door handle jiggled.

The door was kicked open with brutal force.

A tall man in black tactical gear, wielding a suppressed assault rifle with an infrared laser sight, stepped into the smoke-filled room. The red dot swept across the empty bed, the discarded blood pressure monitors, and then swung toward the steel cabinet.

Dr. Evans lunged from behind the door, swinging the heavy metal flashlight at the operative's helmet.

*CRACK!*

The blow knocked the mercenary off balance, but he spun with lethal reflex, driving the butt of his rifle into Dr. Evans’ temple. The elderly doctor collapsed to the floor, motionless, blood pooling on the tiles.

The mercenary turned his rifle directly toward the cabinet where I was hiding.

"Found you," he growled.

I didn't think. I didn't hesitate.

I leaned out from behind the steel cabinet, raised the heavy pistol with both hands, aimed straight at the dark visor of his mask, and pulled the trigger.

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The deafening reports inside the small room were blinding. The operative stumbled backward, two rounds shattering his protective visor, his rifle clattering to the floor as he collapsed against the drywall, sliding down in a heap of lifeless gear.

My hands were shaking violently, the smell of gunpowder burning my throat.

Suddenly, through the smoke, the clinic's internal PA system crackled to life with an automated, robotic countdown:

*"Facility containment compromised. Structural failure sequence initiated. Detonation in two minutes. Evacuate immediately."*

A bomb.

I fell to my knees, holding Leo and Maya against my chest, crawling through the smoke toward the shattered window. The pain in my abdomen was blinding, hot blood soaking through my bandages.

"Dante..." I sobbed into the dark. "Dante, where are you?!"
