Chapter 19 - The Lion Returns to Chicago

The skyline of Chicago rose out of the winter fog like jagged shards of black glass.

Driving into the city in the reinforced Suburban flanked by Keller’s convoy felt like entering enemy territory. Every billboard, every glass-walled skyscraper bearing the iconic interlocking 'M' logo of Moretti Enterprises seemed to loom over us like an armed garrison.

"Local authorities have been issued a sealed warrant," Keller reported from the front passenger seat, monitoring police frequencies on a tactical headset. "Eleanor filed an emergency child welfare hold. They’ve flagged Dante’s facial recognition on all public traffic cameras downtown."

"Then jam the grid," Dante ordered, his voice cold and steady from the back seat, where he sat beside me and the twins.

Keller tapped his tablet. "Signal suppressors active within a three-block radius. We have a green corridor straight to the Daley Center."

At 10:45 AM, our convoy slammed to a halt outside the granite steps of the Cook County Courthouse. Heavy snow was falling, muffling the roar of midday traffic. Pedestrians turned and stared as four massive private security guards in tactical suits stepped out, forming a walking perimeter around Dante, me, and our twins nestled securely in their dual stroller.

Dante looked every inch the corporate warlord. His tailored black coat billowed in the wind, his jaw set, his dark eyes radiating pure lethality. People parted like the Red Sea as we swept through the revolving doors.

The courthouse metal detectors didn't stop us; Keller flashed federal executive protection credentials, escorting us directly toward Courtroom 402—Judge Carter’s private chambers.

Just as we reached the double mahogany doors of the courtroom, the elevator bank down the hall chimed.

Stepping out into the marble corridor were Harrison Vance and a team of six corporate lawyers in three-thousand-dollar suits, flanked by four armed county deputies.

"Dante Moretti!" Vance called out, his face turning pale with disbelief. "You are in violation of a standing custody order! Deputies, detain that man and secure those children immediately!"

The four deputies stepped forward, their hands resting on their holsters.

Marcus Keller and his four operators immediately stepped between the deputies and our stroller, their coats parting just enough to reveal suppressed submachine guns strapped across their tactical vests. The tension in the hallway spiked so violently that the ambient air seemed to drop ten degrees.

"Step back, officers," Dante said, his voice echoing off the marble walls like a gunshot. "You are interfering with a federal whistleblower presentation. Touch that stroller, and Judge Carter will have you remanded to federal custody before lunch."

Before Vance could scream another order, the heavy oak door to Courtroom 402 swung open.

Judge Evelyn Carter stood in the threshold, her gray hair pulled into a tight bun, her sharp, piercing eyes taking in the armed standoff with complete disdain.

"What in God's name is happening in my hallway?" she demanded.
