Chapter 22 - The Stolen Genetic Code

The private hangar at Waukegan was transformed into a fortress within thirty minutes. Armed federal marshals guarded the perimeter, rain slashing against the corrugated steel walls as night fell over the tarmac. Inside the operations trailer, the scent of stale coffee and ozone hung heavy in the air.
I sat on a metal folding chair, wrapped in Dante's heavy wool overcoat, watching the screens flicker. Dr. Evans, our personal obstetrician who had been flown in under federal escort, gently pressed a portable ultrasound probe to my stomach.
The steady, galloping rhythm of two heartbeats echoed through the small speaker: *thump-thump, thump-thump.*
"The twins are under stress, Lena," Dr. Evans said quietly, his eyes kind but serious behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "Your blood pressure is spiking. You're thirty-four weeks along. If this continues, your water could break at any moment. You need bed rest, not an armed standoff."
"I can't rest while a ghost is trying to steal my family," I said, my teeth chattering despite the warmth of the coat.
Across the room, Dante slammed his fist onto the stainless-steel desk, rattling the monitors. Standing before him was Arthur Sterling, the Moretti family’s senior legal counsel, looking pale and disheveled after being pulled from his suburban home by Keller’s agents.
"How did Julianna get standing to file in Cook County?" Dante snarled, towering over the lawyer. "Eleanor is facing life in federal prison! Harrison Vance is being processed at the MCC! How does a fugitive mistress file a legal petition in open court?"
"Because she’s not listed as a fugitive, Dante," Sterling stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. "Julianna Vance never had a warrant issued in her name. When Harrison was indicted, she was categorized as an unindicted co-conspirator who had vanished. But this morning, her legal team presented a certified birth certificate issued by a private clinic in Toronto, stamped forty-eight hours ago. The child is registered as Alexander Moretti. And attached to the birth certificate is an undeniable DNA paternity match."
"Forged," Dante spat. "It’s a lie."
"It’s not forged, Dante," Keller interrupted, walking in from the rain, his coat dripping water onto the linoleum floor. "We just intercepted the lab manifests from the Toronto clinic. The genetic sample used for the in-vitro procedure came directly from the cryo-vault in Boston that Eleanor controlled. That infant Julianna is holding is your biological son. Biologically, he is your firstborn."
The room spun. I pressed my palm against the side of the desk to steady myself.
Under the centuries-old bylaws of the Moretti Trust—the very document Dante had fought so hard to reclaim from his mother—the firstborn male heir of the reigning patriarch held executive claim to sixty percent of the family’s global holdings, bypassing any subsequent children unless explicitly contested before the child reached thirty days of age.
"Eleanor knew she was losing," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "She knew Harrison's corporate raid was failing. So she activated Julianna. If Alexander is legally recognized as Dante's firstborn, Julianna, as the custodial parent, becomes the legal executor of Dante's entire fortune."
"And worse," Sterling added, his voice trembling. "Julianna’s filing alleges that Dante is mentally unstable and that you, Lena, are an unfit mother due to 'ongoing criminal endangerment.' She’s using the federal indictments against Dante's mother to argue that Dante’s environment is hostile. The judge on duty tonight is Judge Jonathan Miller."
Dante froze. His eyes flared with a lethal, predatory fire. "Miller was appointed to the bench fifteen years ago by Harrison Vance’s political action committee."
"Yes," Sterling said, swallowing hard. "The emergency hearing is scheduled for 8:00 AM tomorrow. If you don't appear, or if you refuse to surrender the assets into escrow, Judge Miller will grant temporary legal custody of Alexander to Julianna—and issue an order for Child Protective Services to take custody of your twins the second they are born in any hospital within the jurisdiction."
Dante turned toward me. The fury in his eyes vanished, replaced by an agonizing tenderness that broke my heart. He walked across the room, knelt beside my chair, and took my cold hands in his.
"They think they have me cornered," Dante murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly, lethal whisper. "They think a piece of paper signed by a corrupt judge can take my wife and my children from me. They don't know what I'm willing to burn down to keep you safe."
Suddenly, a sharp, searing pain tore through my lower abdomen. I gasped, doubling over, my fingers digging into Dante's shoulders.
"Lena?!" Dante cried out, catching me as I slipped from the chair.
Dr. Evans rushed forward, placing a hand on my abdomen. His face drained of color. "Contractions. Strong ones. The stress has triggered early labor."

Outside, the storm intensified, thunder shaking the very foundations of the hangar.
