Chapter 26 - The Monster's Bargain

"She’s coming here?" I gasped, trying to sit up on the recovery bed, searing pain shooting through my surgical incision. "Dante, she’s coming to take Leo and Maya?!"

"She will die before she crosses that threshold," Dante snarled, cocking the slide of his weapon with a metallic snap.

"Dante, listen to me!" Keller grabbed his arm, his voice urgent and commanding. "If you open fire on state marshals executing a court order, you will be branded a domestic terrorist! Eleanor’s syndicate will have won without firing a shot! They will put you in a supermax facility, take Lena into custody, and Julianna will gain absolute, uncontested legal guardianship of all three children!"

The bitter, suffocating trap snapped shut around us.

Eleanor and Julianna hadn't just created an army—they had turned the very machinery of justice into an executioner's block. If Dante fought back with violence, we lost our children. If we complied with the order, we lost our children.

Suddenly, Dante’s private cell phone chimed on the stainless-steel counter.

Dante snatched it up and hit the speakerphone.

*"Dante, darling,"* Julianna’s voice purred through the speaker, crisp, cool, and dripping with venomous amusement. *"I hear congratulations are in order. A boy and a girl. How wonderfully pedestrian."*

"Where are you, Julianna?" Dante’s voice was deathly quiet, the calm before an apocalyptic storm.

*"I’m sitting in the back of a black Mercedes, parked exactly three blocks from your little clandestine clinic,"* she chuckled softly. *"With six uniformed state deputies who believe they are rescuing two endangered infants from an unhinged, violent billionaire father. Isn't public relations marvelous?"*

"What do you want?" Dante asked, his eyes burning into the phone.

*"A conversation,"* she replied smoothly. *"Just you and me. No federal marshals, no lawyers, and certainly not that pathetic, lower-class secretary you made your wife. Meet me at the old pump station on the bluff overlooking the lake. You have fifteen minutes. If you bring Keller, or if you don't show, I wave my hand, and the deputies breach the clinic with full legal authority."*

"Why should I believe you won't send them anyway?"

*"Because, Dante,"* Julianna murmured, her tone dropping into a seductive, chilling whisper, *"I don't actually want Lena’s brats. I don't care about your twins. I want what was promised to me five years ago. I want the Moretti empire, and I want the man who built it. Alexander is my ticket to the vault, but you... you are the prize. Come alone, Dante. Or say goodbye to your precious family forever."*

The line went dead.

Dante stood frozen, staring at the phone. Outside, the distant wail of emergency sirens echoed faintly through the howling blizzard.

"You can't go," I begged, clutching his arm, weeping as I held our babies close to my breast. "It’s a trap, Dante! She’s going to kill you!"

Dante turned to me, his dark eyes brimming with unspeakable sorrow. He leaned down, cupping my face in his large, scarred hands, kissing me with a desperation that tasted of tears and salt.

"If I stay here, they take our children, Lena," he said softly, his voice breaking. "Keller will secure the clinic’s underground exit. You take Leo and Maya. You get to the Canadian border through Keller’s network."

"No!" I screamed, shaking my head violently. "Not without you! We swore an oath, Dante! Together or nothing!"

"I love you, Lena," he whispered, pressing one final, lingering kiss against my lips. "I have loved you from the moment you walked into my office six years ago, and I will love you with my last breath."

He pulled away, turned to Keller, and barked, "If anything touches my wife, Keller, burn the world down."

May you like

Before I could grab him, Dante turned and walked out into the storm, vanishing into the swirling white abyss.
