Chapter 28 - The Architect of Betrayal

Dante’s heart stopped. The world around him went completely silent, the roar of the blizzard fading beneath a terrifying, paralyzing rush of pure terror.

"You're lying," Dante choked out, his voice trembling for the first time in his life.

"Check your phone, darling," Julianna smiled, stepping back toward the iron railing, clutching the baby securely against her chest. "Call Keller. See if he answers."

With trembling fingers, Dante pulled his phone from his coat and hit Keller’s direct speed dial.

Static. Then, a single, horrifying sound: the rapid stutter of automatic gunfire, followed by Keller’s desperate, blood-curdling shout through the speaker:

*"Dante! It's a breach! They’re not cops—they’re black-ops! They’ve locked down the clinic exits! Lena is—"*

A deafening explosion blew out the audio, followed by a high-pitched drone of dead air.

"No!" Dante roared, turning on his heel to sprint back toward the road.

"Take one step, Dante, and I press this button immediately!" Julianna screamed, holding up the detonator, her thumb resting on the red toggle. "The charges under the foundation are on a five-minute timer, but this remote initiates immediate detonation!"

Dante skidded to a halt on the icy iron walkway, his chest heaving, his eyes wild with a feral, helpless rage. "Julianna, please! The children! They’re innocent! Don't do this!"

"Innocent?!" she shrieked, the wind whipping her hair into a black halo of madness. "Where was your mercy when you left me in that Swiss clinic? Where was your mercy when your mother threatened to erase my name from history? You created this monster, Dante! You and Eleanor!"

"Then kill me!" Dante screamed, dropping to his knees on the freezing metal, tearing open his shirt. "Take my life! Let them live! I’m begging you, Julianna! I am on my knees begging you!"

The mighty Dante Moretti—the lion of Chicago, the man who had brought down global cartels and corporate empires without flinching—was on his knees in the snow, weeping, pleading for the lives of his wife and newborn twins.

Julianna looked down at him, her expression a mix of twisted satisfaction and profound disgust.

"Look at you," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Crawling in the dirt for an ordinary woman. It makes me sick."

She looked down at the infant in her arms. The baby began to whimper, disturbed by the screaming and the cold.

"Do you know the funniest part of all this, Dante?" Julianna smiled, a bizarre, haunting calm washing over her. "This baby... Alexander... he isn't yours."

Dante looked up, stunned through his tears. "What?"

"Eleanor was smart, but she was arrogant," Julianna laughed, a low, guttural chuckle. "She tried to harvest your genetics, but your vault in Boston was locked with biometric encryption only you held. She couldn't access the primary samples. So she improvised. She used genetic material from Harrison Vance’s secret surrogate program—combined with my own."

Julianna leaned forward, her eyes wide with psychotic glee. "Alexander is my brother, Dante. Harrison’s true, unacknowledged son. There is not a single drop of Moretti blood in this child. The court documents, the lab tests—all forged by Judge Miller before my operatives put a bullet in his head an hour ago."

Dante stared at her, the horrific scale of the deception crashing over him. "You orchestrated everything... not Eleanor. You."

"Eleanor was the architect of the cage," Julianna said, her thumb pressing lightly against the detonator switch. "I’m just the one who lights the match. Three minutes left on the timer, Dante. Run. See if you can reach her before she burns."

With a sudden, terrifying movement, Julianna didn't wait.

She turned, stepped up onto the rusted iron railing overlooking the eighty-foot drop into the freezing, jagged rocks of Lake Michigan, holding the baby tight to her chest.

"Julianna, NO!" Dante screamed, lunging forward.
