Chapter 9 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE LIBRARY

The old family house looked exactly as I remembered.
Dark.
Huge.
Cold.
My grandfather's library hadn't been touched since his death.
Dust covered the shelves.
The fireplace was empty.
My mother stood behind me.
"The room is here."
"Where?"
She pointed toward a bookshelf.
I pulled several books.
Nothing happened.
Then I remembered something my grandfather once told me.
"When you can't find a door, look for the book nobody reads."
I searched.
One book stood out.
It was upside down.
I pulled it.
The entire shelf moved.
A hidden door opened.
Inside was a small room.
There was a desk.
A safe.
And an old tape recorder.
I pressed play.
My grandfather's voice filled the room.
"Graham, if you're hearing this, your mother finally chose courage."
I looked at my mother.
She started crying.
The recording continued.
"I know what Daniel has done."
"I know what Emily knows."
"And I know what will happen if the truth comes out."
My grandfather explained everything.
Daniel had been involved in an illegal child-placement network.
He had manipulated families.
He had stolen identities.
He had arranged illegal adoptions.
My mother discovered it.
At first, she helped him.
Then she tried to escape.
My grandfather found out.
He confronted them.
Daniel threatened Noah.
My mother agreed to hide him.
Emily protected Leah.
And I became Leah's father.
My grandfather had deliberately placed the trust in my name.
Because he knew one thing.
I would protect the children.
The recording ended.
Then another started.
My grandfather's voice was quieter.
"Graham, there is one final truth."
I leaned closer.
"Leah was never randomly placed in your life."
I froze.
"Her biological father was Daniel Voss."
Emily had been right.
"But Leah's biological mother was not Emily."
My heart stopped.
I turned toward Emily.
She was crying.
"What?"
My grandfather continued.
"Emily was Leah's guardian."
I stared at her.
"Then who is her mother?"
The recording answered.
"Her mother is your sister, Caroline."
I couldn't breathe.
My mother covered her mouth.
Emily closed her eyes.
Everything went silent.
My sister.
Caroline.
The woman who had sat at Christmas dinner.
The woman who had told me not to make everything dramatic.
The woman whose children sat at the beautiful table while Leah sat beside the trash.
My sister was Leah's biological mother.
I stepped backward.
"No."
Emily whispered:
"I'm sorry."
I stared at her.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Since Leah was born."
I felt betrayed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Caroline begged me."
"Why?"
"Because she was afraid."
"Of Daniel?"
Emily nodded.
"She had been involved with him."
I sat down.
The world felt unreal.
My grandfather's voice continued.
"Caroline gave birth to Leah secretly. She believed Daniel would take the child. Emily helped her escape."
I looked at my mother.
She whispered:
"I knew."
My heart broke.
"Everyone knew."
Nobody answered.
Then the recording changed.
My grandfather's voice became urgent.
"If Caroline ever tells Graham the truth, he must understand one thing."
"She did not abandon Leah."
I looked up.
"She was trying to save her."
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had believed Leah had been abandoned.
Now I discovered her biological mother had been sitting across from me every Christmas.
And had never told me.
Then the door behind us slammed shut.
Daniel's voice came from the hallway.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
We turned.

He stood there.
Holding a gun.
