Chapter 31 - THE WOMAN WHO RAISED SARAH

We landed in California just before sunrise.

I hadn't slept.

None of us had.

The photograph of Leah was still open on my phone.

The elderly woman beside her was Sarah's mother.

My grandmother.

A woman I had been told was dead for years.

Sarah sat beside me in silence.

Finally, she spoke.

"Her name was Evelyn."

I looked at her.

"You called her your mother."

"She was."

"And my grandmother."

"Yes."

I struggled to understand.

"Then why did everyone say she died?"

Sarah looked out the airplane window.

"Because she wanted them to."

"Why?"

"After she realized what Arthur had turned the family system into, she tried to destroy it."

"Arthur found out?"

"He found out everything."

"What happened?"

Sarah took a slow breath.

"He tried to kill her."

I stared at her.

"But she survived."

"Yes."

"And my father?"

"He helped her disappear."

That explained the photograph.

My father had been alive.

He had been helping Evelyn.

And somehow, Leah had become part of their plan.

We drove for two hours before reaching a quiet coastal town.

The house was hidden behind tall trees.

No gate.

No security cameras.

No sign.

Just an old white house overlooking the ocean.

Daniel stopped the car.

"This is it."

I stepped out.

Sarah remained inside.

"Why aren't you coming?"

She shook her head.

"I'm afraid."

"Of your mother?"

"Of what she will tell you."

I walked toward the front door.

Before I could knock, it opened.

An elderly woman stood there.

She looked at me.

For a moment, her eyes filled with tears.

"Graham."

I couldn't speak.

She looked exactly like the woman in the photograph.

My grandmother.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

"You grew up so quickly."

I stared at her.

"You know who I am?"

She smiled sadly.

"I'm the one who chose your name."

My chest tightened.

"What?"

She stepped aside.

"Come in."

I entered.

The house was filled with photographs.

My father.

Sarah.

Daniel.

Leah.

Me.

Photos from years ago.

Photos I had never seen.

Then I saw one that made me stop.

It was taken the day Leah came into my life.

I was standing outside an old house.

I was holding a baby.

Leah.

I had no memory of that moment.

But the photograph was real.

Evelyn came closer.

"You don't remember because you were drugged."

I turned.

"What?"

"You had been threatened."

"By Arthur?"

She shook her head.

"By someone worse."

"Who?"

She looked toward the hallway.

Then said:

"Your father."

My heart stopped.

"My father?"

"Your father wanted to protect you."

"Then why did he erase my memory?"

"Because he knew what you would do if you remembered."

"What?"

"You would have gone after Arthur."

"And?"

"You would have died."

I stared at her.

"Where is he?"

Evelyn looked down.

"He's here."

The hallway behind her remained dark.

Then a man stepped out.

Gray hair.

Older face.

But unmistakable.

My father.

Alive.

He looked at me.

May you like

And said:

"I'm sorry, Graham."
