Chapter 17 - THE LAST FILE

We drove back to the city before sunrise.

Michael slept in the back seat.

My father sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

The USB drive contained hundreds of files.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Adoption documents.

Names.

Dates.

Everything.

But one file was different.

It was labeled:

GRAHAM REED — FINAL

I clicked it.

My grandfather appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

"If you're watching this, then Arthur has finally revealed himself."

I stared.

My grandfather continued.

"There is something I never told you."

He paused.

"You were not my last attempt to save this family."

I frowned.

"You were my first."

My grandfather explained.

"When your father agreed to help Arthur, I knew I couldn't trust him."

"But I couldn't abandon my family."

"So I created the trust."

"I created the adoption clause."

"And I created the archive."

"Every document was hidden where Arthur couldn't find it."

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"I knew one day Arthur would try to use Leah."

I looked at the screen.

"That is why I arranged for Graham to become her father."

My eyes filled with tears.

My grandfather had known.

He had planned everything.

He continued.

"Leah is not simply another child in this story."

"She is the witness."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

My grandfather leaned closer to the camera.

"Because her biological mother kept something Arthur never found."

The video ended.

A second file opened automatically.

It was Emily.

She looked terrified.

"If you're seeing this, then I'm probably dead."

I froze.

Emily continued.

"Leah's biological mother is Caroline."

I already knew.

"But Caroline doesn't know the whole truth."

My heart tightened.

"Leah's father is Daniel."

Also known.

"But Daniel was not the only father recorded."

A document appeared.

Two names.

Daniel Voss.

Arthur Voss.

My stomach dropped.

Emily continued.

"Arthur falsified Leah's records because he wanted control over her adoption."

"But the original DNA record is different."

A scan appeared.

I stared.

Biological Father: Arthur Voss.

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel had lied.

My mother had lied.

Everyone had been wrong.

Arthur was Leah's biological father.

Then another line appeared.

Biological Mother: Caroline Reed.

The file ended.

My father stared at me.

"So..."

I couldn't speak.

Leah was Arthur's granddaughter.

And Arthur had spent years trying to reclaim her.

I looked toward the back seat.

Michael was awake.

He was staring at the screen.

"Is he my father?"

I turned.

Michael pointed at Arthur's photograph.

I nodded slowly.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"Then why did he leave me?"

I didn't know what to say.

My father did.

"Because he never loved us."

Michael looked at him.

"Did you?"

My father started crying.

"Not enough."

The boy looked away.

I reached back and held his hand.

"We're family now."

Michael looked at me.

"Does that mean I can stay with you?"

I smiled.

"Yes."

Then my phone rang.

Caroline.

I answered.

"Graham!"

Her voice was frantic.

"Where are you?"

"With Dad."

"Where is Michael?"

I froze.

"How do you know about Michael?"

She started crying.

"Because Arthur took Ethan."

"What?"

"He didn't take Ethan."

She gasped.

"He took Leah."

I stood.

"What are you talking about?"

Caroline whispered:

"The photograph."

"The one of Leah."

"Yes."

"It was taken three weeks ago."

"Exactly."

"By Arthur."

"No."

She was crying.

"It was taken by someone else."

"Who?"

Caroline whispered:

May you like

"Your mother."

My heart stopped.
