Chapter 30 - THE TRUTH LEAH LEFT BEHIND

I don't remember running downstairs.

I don't remember shouting.

I only remember the moment Sarah saw the empty hallway.

She collapsed against the wall.

"No."

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

"Graham, listen to me."

"Find her."

"We will."

"Find my daughter!"

"I will."

I pulled away.

"You promised to protect her."

Daniel's face broke.

"I know."

Police arrived within minutes.

The house was surrounded.

Every road was blocked.

Security footage was collected.

But there was one problem.

The cameras had gone offline exactly ninety seconds before Leah disappeared.

Ninety seconds.

That wasn't a random failure.

Someone had planned it.

Michael arrived.

He examined the system.

"Someone had internal access."

"Who?"

He shook his head.

"I don't know yet."

Sarah sat silently on the sofa.

She looked devastated.

Then she said:

"I know where they took her."

Everyone turned.

"Where?"

She looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"Tell him."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"When Leah was four, Arthur took her to a property in Vermont."

"Why?"

"Because that's where the original records were kept."

"What property?"

"The old Whitmore summer house."

I looked at Michael.

"Is it still there?"

He checked his phone.

"Yes."

"Then we're going."

Police tried to stop us.

I didn't care.

This wasn't about revenge.

This was my daughter.

We drove through the night.

Daniel drove.

Sarah sat beside him.

I sat in the back with Michael and Elena.

Nobody spoke.

Then, around 2 a.m., my phone buzzed.

A video.

I opened it.

Leah was sitting in a chair.

She wasn't tied up.

She wasn't crying.

But she looked frightened.

A man's voice spoke off-camera.

"Leah, tell your father where you are."

She looked directly at the camera.

"Dad..."

I felt my heart tear apart.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Don't come alone."

The video ended.

Michael looked at me.

"She knew."

"What?"

"She was warning us."

I replayed the video.

This time I noticed something.

Behind Leah was a window.

Outside the window was snow.

But it wasn't snowing when we left.

Vermont had no snow that week.

I paused the frame.

Michael leaned closer.

"That's not Vermont."

"What?"

"Look at the trees."

I stared.

They weren't pine trees.

They were eucalyptus.

Sarah suddenly covered her mouth.

"Oh my God."

"What?"

"I know where she is."

"Where?"

She looked at me.

"California."

"Why?"

"Because that's where my mother lived."

I frowned.

"Your mother?"

Sarah nodded.

"The woman who raised me."

"Who was she?"

Sarah's face went pale.

"Your grandmother."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"My mother wasn't dead."

I couldn't breathe.

Sarah continued.

"She changed her identity years ago."

"Why?"

"Because she was running from Arthur."

"But you said she created the system."

"I said she started it."

Sarah looked at me.

"Then she tried to destroy it."

Everything became silent.

"Where is she now?"

Sarah whispered:

"California."

I looked at Daniel.

He already understood.

"We have to go."

But before anyone moved, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

No video this time.

Just a photograph.

Leah was standing beside an elderly woman.

The woman had one hand on Leah's shoulder.

I had never seen her before.

But Sarah had.

She began crying.

"That's her."

"Who?"

"My mother."

I looked at the photograph.

Then I noticed the woman's face.

Something about her eyes looked familiar.

Too familiar.

I zoomed in.

The photograph had been taken recently.

And on the table behind them was a framed picture.

It showed my father.

Standing beside the same woman.

Alive.

The date beneath the photograph was only six months ago.

I stared at it.

My father had supposedly died three years earlier.

But the picture proved otherwise.

Sarah whispered:

"Graham..."

I looked at her.

"Your father is alive."

And suddenly I understood the final truth.

This wasn't a kidnapping.

It was a reunion.

Someone had taken Leah because they wanted to bring the entire family back together.

May you like

And whoever had planned it...

had known exactly how I would react.
