Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Ashes

The penthouse suite of the Caruso tower overlooked a city drenched in midnight rain.

The battle at the Plaza was over. Salvatore Moretti had been captured at the helipad by Dominic’s team, stripped of his weapons, and handed over to federal authorities along with twenty gigabytes of unredacted evidence provided by Claire’s analytical files. The Moretti syndicate was extinguished in a single night—not by indiscriminate bloodshed, but by a ruthless masterclass in strategic destruction.

Inside the quiet penthouse, Claire stood on the balcony, watching the rain cascade down the glass balustrade. The cool night air soothed the ache in her shoulder.

She heard the terrace door slide open.

Vincent walked out, carrying a warm cashmere blanket. Without a word, he draped it around her shoulders, his hands lingering on her arms. He had stripped off his tuxedo jacket and bowtie; his shirt was unbuttoned at the top, showing the dark, heavy pulse at the base of his throat.

"The Commission unanimously voted to dissolve the Moretti family an hour ago," Vincent said quietly. "Their territory belongs to us now. The war is over."

"Congratulations, Mr. Caruso," Claire said softly, staring out at the skyline. "You won."

"Did I?"

She turned to look at him, puzzled. "You own the five boroughs. No one will dare challenge you again."

"And what about you, Claire?" Vincent asked, his eyes fixing on hers with an intensity that made her knees feel weak. "Are you going to ask for your Brooklyn apartment back? Are you going to hand in your two weeks' notice and look for an ordinary job where no one shoots at you?"

Claire swallowed hard. The moment of truth had arrived. She could walk away. Vincent had deposited five million dollars into her private account that afternoon—a severance package that could ensure she never had to work another day in her life.

"Is that what you want?" she asked, her voice trembling. "For me to leave?"

Vincent took a step closer, closing the distance between them until her chest brushed against his.

"I have spent my whole life believing love was a fatal flaw," Vincent murmured, his hand gently rising to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray raindrop from her skin. "My father was betrayed because he loved his brother. My mother died of grief because she loved a monster. I swore that my heart would remain a vault of stone."

He tilted her face up, forcing her to look into the storm brewing behind his blue-gray eyes.

"And then you ran across that conference room," he continued, his voice thick with unbridled emotion. "You threw yourself in front of a bullet meant for my heart. And while you were bleeding out on that floor, my entire universe collapsed. I didn't care about the company. I didn't care about the docks, the money, the family honor. I only cared about the breath in your lungs."

Tears welled in Claire’s eyes, spilling over her lashes. "Vincent..."

"I love you, Claire," the king of New York confessed, bare and defenseless before his secretary. "Not as my assistant. Not as an asset. I love you as my equal. My sanctuary. If you leave, take the money and be safe. But if you stay... you stay as my wife. You stay as the queen of this city."

Claire let out a breathless, half-sob of relief.

She raised her uninjured left hand, tangling her fingers into the soft, dark hair at the nape of his neck, and pulled him down toward her.

"I stayed for four years, Vincent," she whispered against his lips. "I'm not going anywhere."

May you like

When his mouth met hers, it was not the kiss of a ruthless criminal, but the desperate, passionate surrender of a man who had finally found his home in the middle of a war zone.
