Chapter 7 - A Dance on Razor Wire

Lorenzo Conti did not survive the night. By sunrise, his body was at the bottom of the Hudson, and the remaining captains of the five families knew that the Caruso Syndicate was not wounded—it had become rabid.
Yet the primary threat remained: Salvatore Moretti, the old-school patriarch who had orchestrated the hit from his sprawling fortress in Upstate New York.
"He's throwing an annual charity ball at the Plaza Hotel tomorrow night," Dominic said, spreading architectural blueprints across the master study’s desk. "Two hundred guests. Politicians, judges, international consuls. Moretti thinks the high-society presence makes him untouchable. He thinks you won't dare strike in a room full of federal witnesses."
"Then he doesn't know me," Vincent said darkly, loading a black magazine into his custom 1911.
"You can't just storm the Plaza with submachine guns, Vincent," Claire interjected from the leather couch, reviewing the guest list on her laptop. "The FBI has field agents stationed in the lobby for diplomatic security. If you turn the ballroom into a slaughterhouse, the Department of Justice will declare war on the Caruso family. You will lose everything you built."
Vincent looked up at her, irritation and admiration warring behind his eyes. "And what do you suggest, Miss Bennett? We send him a sternly worded email?"
Claire closed the laptop with a snap. "We use their own rules against them. Moretti invited you. The invitation specifically reads: *Vincent Caruso and Guest*. He thinks you'll decline out of paranoia. He thinks your secretary is dead or incapacitated."
Dominic frowned. "You want him to go? That's walking straight into the lion's mouth."
"No," Claire said, rising to her feet, her gaze unyielding. "We walk in together. The entire underworld believes Vincent Caruso was rattled by the assassination attempt. They think his organization is fractured. If we walk in side-by-side—untouched, magnificent, and displaying the financial evidence of Moretti’s illegal heroin shipments to the Port Commissioner who will be standing right by his side—Moretti will be politically, legally, and socially ruined before the clock strikes midnight."
Vincent walked around the desk, stopping two inches from her. "You are not going into that room. You were shot less than two weeks ago."
"The bullet was meant for you," Claire said, looking straight into his eyes without flinching. "I finished that job, Vincent. Let me finish this one. The city needs to see that we don't break. That *you* don't break."
Vincent stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. His fingers twitched, desperate to reach out and pull her against him, to lock her in a safe room deep underground where the filth of his world could never touch her again.
"If so much as a shadow moves toward you," Vincent whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal possessiveness, "I will burn that hotel to the ground, laws be damned."

"I know," Claire whispered back, a faint, fearless smile playing on her lips. "That's why I'm wearing black."
