Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Vow

Three months later.

The Cathedral of St. Patrick was guarded by three hundred men in black suits. The surrounding four city blocks were entirely closed to public traffic, cleared by the NYPD under the personal order of the Mayor.

Inside, the grand nave echoed with the majestic swell of the pipe organ. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting vibrant pools of ruby, sapphire, and gold across the marble aisle.

Every living syndicate head from Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas, and Montreal sat in the pews, their heads bowed in profound, respectful silence. They had not come merely to witness a wedding; they had come to swear fealty to a dynasty.

At the altar stood Vincent Caruso.

He wore a custom black Italian tuxedo, his shoulders square, his face radiating an absolute, undisputed power. Beside him stood Dominic Vale, holding two platinum bands engraved with Latin scripture.

Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open.

A collective intake of breath swept through the congregation.

Claire walked down the aisle alone.

She needed no one to give her away. She wore a breathtaking gown of French lace and ivory silk, its long cathedral train trailing behind her like a royal mantle. The high lace collar was masterfully designed to sweep across her right clavicle, where the faint silver line of her scar remained—not hidden in shame, but worn like a badge of divine valor.

Her hazel eyes never left Vincent’s.

As she reached the altar, Vincent stepped down from the dais to meet her, taking both of her hands in his. His eyes were bright, his hands steady, holding hers as if she were the most precious, fragile artifact in existence.

The archbishop cleared his throat, but Vincent raised a single hand, silencing the priest before the congregation.

Vincent looked directly into Claire’s eyes, speaking not just to her, but to every underworld lord sitting in the cathedral, his voice carrying clearly to the highest rafters:

"Four months ago, a bullet meant to end my life tore through this woman's flesh," Vincent said, his voice ringing with absolute, immutable authority. "She shed her blood so that I might breathe. She gave me my life—and today, I give it back to her."

He slid the platinum ring onto her slender finger.

"From this day forth, Claire Caruso is not my shadow. She is my voice. Her word is my law. Her mercy is your only salvation, and her anger will be your executioner. Whosoever honors her, honors the throne of this family. And whosoever dares to bring a shadow across her path... will find that hell itself is not deep enough to hide from my wrath."

Claire smiled, a vision of fierce, radiant grace. She took the second ring, sliding it onto Vincent’s finger, leaning close enough that only he could hear her whisper:

"Cancel the nine-thirty call, Mr. Caruso. You belong to me now."

Vincent’s face broke into a dazzling, rare smile. He pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping his arm around her waist, and kissed his new bride before God, the underworld, and the entire city.

The applause that followed was like the roar of the sea.

The king had bowed to no one his entire life—until an ordinary secretary took a bullet for his heart, and in doing so, taught the beast how to love.
