Chapter 6 - Bloodline and Treason

The grand dining room of the Caruso estate had hosted senators, foreign ambassadors, and the most powerful criminal overlords on the eastern seaboard. Tonight, the long mahogany table was set for only three people.
Fine bone china gleamed under a crystal chandelier. Silver cutlery lay immaculately arranged on crisp linen.
At the head of the table sat Vincent, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo, looking every inch the ruthless aristocrat. To his right sat Lorenzo Conti—Vincent’s sixty-two-year-old great-uncle, a man with silver hair, a manicured mustache, and rings on every finger.
To Vincent’s left sat Claire.
She wore an emerald-green evening dress that cleverly concealed the brace beneath her right arm, the color making her porcelain skin and hazel eyes glow under the chandelier. Her posture was straight, aristocratic, betraying none of the internal tremors running through her limbs.
Lorenzo took a sip of a 1982 Romanée-Conti and chuckled, wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. "A marvelous vintage, Vincent. And a marvelous miracle. Miss Bennett, we were all devastated to hear of your... workplace accident. The family sent flowers to the hospital, though your dragon at the door—Dominic—would not permit visitors."
"Miss Bennett does not care for lilies, Uncle," Vincent said smoothly, cutting into a rare filet mignon with surgical precision. "They smell like funerals."
Lorenzo’s smile wavered for a microsecond. "Of course. Quite right. But Vincent... bringing your administrative assistant to a family dinner? The council is asking questions. There are rumors that your judgment has been clouded by this incident. The Moretti family is moving into our Brooklyn distribution corridors, and you have not retaliated. Some are calling it weakness."
Claire watched Lorenzo carefully.
She noticed his left foot tapping rhythmically against the antique Persian rug. She noticed the slight sheen of perspiration beneath his silk collar. And she noticed the subtle glance he threw toward the double oak doors at the end of the hall.
*He’s waiting for something,* she realized with a cold stab of adrenaline. *The same calm left hand as the shooter.*
"Weakness is a matter of perspective, Lorenzo," Vincent replied, taking a slow sip of wine. "Some think patience is hesitation. Others understand that a predator only crouches before it tears out the throat of its prey."
"Is that a threat, nephew?" Lorenzo’s tone turned icy.
"It is a business assessment," Vincent said. He set his glass down. The chime of the crystal against the wood was deafening. "Tell me, Uncle Lorenzo. When you met with Salvatore Moretti at the diner on Route 4 last Tuesday... how much did he promise you for the Brooklyn ports? Three million? Four?"
Lorenzo went dead white. The fork slipped from his hand, clattering against the china plate.
"I... I don't know what lies you've been fed by your street rats—"
"Marcus Vance sang like a canary before we buried him in the marsh," Vincent interrupted, his voice dropping into that terrifying register of absolute authority. "He gave us the ledger codes. He gave us the audio recordings of your voice authorizing the assassin’s credentials for my private floor."
Lorenzo stood up violently, knocking his chair backward. He reached for his inner jacket pocket—

Dominic Vale stepped out from the shadows behind the sideboard, a sound-suppressed Beretta pressed directly against the base of Lorenzo’s skull.
"Don't do it, Lorenzo," Dominic whispered coldly. "The carpet was imported from Persia. It would be a shame to ruin it."
Claire sat completely motionless. Her heart was hammering against her ribs, but her secretary's instinct kicked in: she reached into her clutch, pulled out a small leather notebook with her left hand, and laid it on the table.
"Uncle Lorenzo," Claire said, her voice clear and perfectly modulated despite the violence in the air. "At 8:14 AM yesterday, Caruso Enterprises executed the short options on your shell corporation in the Caymans. Your assets have been frozen by federal banking regulators under suspicion of offshore money laundering. By morning, you won't have enough money to buy a cup of coffee, let alone hire an army."
Lorenzo stared at her, horror warping his weathered features. "You... you little bitch..."
Vincent was on his feet in the span of a heartbeat.
With blinding speed, he grabbed Lorenzo by the throat, hoisting the older man completely off the floor with one arm and slamming him face-first onto the mahogany table, sending plates, crystal, and wine scattering across the floor.

"You speak to her with respect," Vincent snarled into Lorenzo’s ear, his knuckles turning white as he choked the breath from the traitor. "She didn't just save my life, Uncle. She dismantled your entire empire before dessert was served."
