Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

Across town, Daniel Mercer stood on the observation catwalk overlooking the primary loading bay of Mercer Distribution.

Below him, fifty-two semi-trucks were being loaded with precision. Forklifts hummed, barcode scanners beeped in rhythmic harmony, and workers moved with disciplined efficiency. Everything was running on schedule. The system had not broken.

Frank Castleman walked up the steel stairs and joined him on the catwalk.

"Vance’s primary lenders just pulled their credit lines," Castleman reported, leaning against the yellow railing. "When the news broke that the FBI seized his server backups, his Chicago partners panicked. The entire Vance Capital network is in freefall. By tomorrow morning, his empire will be in receivership."

"And our pharmaceutical contracts?" Daniel asked, keeping his eyes on the trucks below.

"Untouched," Castleman said with a faint smile. "The Department of Defense logistics liaison called twenty minutes ago. They commended your rapid response in flagging the breach. They’re extending our military medical transport contract for another five years. Daniel... you handled this like a general."

Daniel didn't smile. He took a sip of black coffee from a paper cup. "A general who let the enemy sleep in his headquarters for six months."

"You trusted your wife," Castleman said gently. "That isn't a crime, Daniel. What she did was an abomination."

"She thought I was boring, Frank," Daniel murmured, watching truck #402 back into Bay 12 with millimeter precision. "She thought because I didn't drink two-thousand-dollar bottles of wine or post photos on yachts, I didn't know what the world was made of. People like Grant and Allison think the world runs on charm, arrogance, and stolen glamour. They don't understand that the world actually runs on supply chains. It runs on the people who make sure the fuel arrives, the bread is delivered, and the promises are kept."

Castleman nodded. "The arraignment is tomorrow at 9:00 AM. Do you want to be there?"

Daniel looked down at his watch.

May you like

"No," Daniel replied. "Tomorrow at 9:00 AM, our fleet deploys to the Midwest medical corridor. That’s my responsibility. Allison made her delivery; now she can accept the shipment."
