Chapter 5 - The Glass Mask Shatters

By noon, news of the raid at The Halcyon Hotel had hit the local business wire like a shockwave.

Allison sat in a holding cell at the federal courthouse, wearing an oversized gray county jumpsuit. Her diamond pendant—the one Daniel had given her for their tenth Christmas—had been confiscated and sealed in an evidence bag. Her makeup was smeared across her cheeks, and her bare feet felt frozen against the concrete floor.

Her court-appointed public defender, a tired woman named Sarah Lin, entered the room and sat across the metal table.

"Where is Frank Castleman?" Allison demanded, her voice shrill and cracked. "He’s our family lawyer! Why hasn't he posted my bail?"

Sarah Lin sighed, opening a manila folder. "Mrs. Mercer, Frank Castleman represents Mercer Distribution and Daniel Mercer personally. He does not represent you. In fact, he just filed an emergency ex-parte restraining order on behalf of Mr. Mercer, barring you from approaching his residence, his workplace, or any financial accounts associated with his name."

"That’s my house!" Allison screamed, slamming her palms on the table. "I’m on the deed!"

"Not anymore," Lin said bluntly. "The deed was held in a family trust tied to the corporate assets of Mercer Distribution. When you executed the fraudulent transfer documents with Vance Capital last month, you triggered an automatic breach-of-fiduciary clause that revoked your beneficiary status in the trust. Daniel exercised his sole trusteeship at 6:00 AM."

Allison’s breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps. "My clothes... my jewelry... my car!"

"The Mercedes was a corporate lease under the company's fleet account; it was repossessed from the hotel parking garage two hours ago," Lin said without pity. "The jewelry purchased within the last ninety days has been seized as evidence of grand larceny and wire fraud. The United States government has charged you with four counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, and theft of trade secrets involving national security freight."

"What about Grant?" Allison sobbed, clutching her hair. "Grant has millions! His attorneys will get us out!"

Lin looked at her with genuine pity. "Grant Vance’s legal team filed an affidavit three hours ago. They claim Grant was an unwitting victim of your corporate fraud. They submitted text messages from your phone where you promised to deliver Mercer’s proprietary trade secrets in exchange for Vance setting up an offshore trust in your name."

Allison’s heart plummeted into a bottomless abyss.

Grant had orchestrated the texts. He had coached her on what to write, telling her it was "just legal formalities to keep the tax men away." He had built his entire defense strategy around throwing her under the bus the moment things went wrong.

"He... he told me he loved me," Allison whispered, staring blankly at the scratched metal surface of the table. "He said Daniel was a ghost. He said we were going to live in Monaco."

"Well, Mrs. Mercer," the public defender said dryly, packing up her files. "Monaco isn't on the table. But the federal correctional facility in Greenville, Illinois, has an opening for the next twelve to fifteen years."
