Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Allison froze, her throat closing up as if gripped by an invisible fist. "There’s... there’s a mistake! My husband—this is a domestic issue! We had an argument!"
"Nobody is here about your marriage, Mrs. Mercer," Special Agent Miller said with clinical indifference. He gestured to two agents, who immediately moved toward the leather bags sitting beside the entryway. "We are executing an emergency search and seizure warrant for stolen Department of Defense logistics infrastructure hardware and classified cross-docking encryption keys."
Grant Vance’s smooth, predatory facade shattered into furious panic. "Do you have any idea who my attorneys are? I haven't touched any government property! Whatever is in those bags belongs to her!" He pointed an accusing finger straight at Allison. "She brought those files! She signed the transfer documents! I’m merely an outside investor!"
Allison stared at Grant, the blood draining completely from her face. "Grant? What are you saying? You told me to copy the drives! You said we were using them to leverage the Chicago contract!"
"Shut your mouth!" Grant snarled, his voice cracking with rage. "You’re an embezzling housewife trying to drag me into your mess!"
Agent Miller stepped between them. "Mr. Vance, save it for the magistrate. You co-signed the unauthorized access protocol at 11:42 PM last night using Mercer Distribution’s private API keys. Your IP address was traced directly to this room. Turn around. Hands behind your back."
As the handcuffs clicked around Grant’s wrists, Daniel Mercer stepped into the room.
He didn't look like the tired, crushed man who had sat alone in the dark living room six hours ago. He wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his hair neatly combed, his eyes clear, frigid, and terrifyingly calm.
Allison gasped, lunging forward a step before an agent held up a restraining hand. "Daniel! Daniel, thank God! Tell them! Tell them this is a misunderstanding! Grant lied to me! He tricked me into signing those papers!"
Daniel looked at her. His gaze was so detached, so devoid of affection or even hatred, that Allison felt colder than if he had slapped her.
"You told me at 11:47 PM that I was predictable, Allison," Daniel said, his voice quiet, conversational, perfectly modulated. "You were right. I’m an operations man. I predict risk. I prepare contingencies. And when cargo becomes hazardous waste, I dispose of it."
"Daniel, please!" Allison cried, tears finally breaking through her heavy mascara. "We've been married for eight years! You can't let them arrest me!"
"You didn't think about eight years when you gave him the safe combination to our home," Daniel replied evenly. "You didn't think about eight years when you laughed into the phone while he spent the company’s operating cash on hotel suites and jewelry."
Daniel turned his eyes to Grant Vance, who was glaring at him with venomous fury.
"You like to move fast, Grant," Daniel remarked, glancing at the gold watch on his own wrist. "You don't ask permission to enjoy life. Well, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri doesn't ask permission either. Your Chicago offices are being raided right now. Every asset tied to Vance Capital has been frozen under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."
Grant’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. "You set this up."
May you like
"No," Daniel replied softly. "You did. I just provided the logistics."
