Chapter 3 - Morning at the Penthouse

At 6:30 AM, sunlight flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the presidential suite at The Halcyon Hotel.
Allison Mercer stretched across the 800-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, feeling a delicious sense of liberation. The room smelled of champagne and expensive lilies. On the dresser sat the velvet box from Harry Winston, containing a thirty-thousand-dollar diamond tennis bracelet she had ordered on Daniel’s corporate account.
Beside her, Grant Vance was already awake, wearing a silk robe, sipping an espresso while scrolling through his tablet.
"Did you check the safe file?" Allison asked, purring as she sat up, letting the silk sheet fall to her waist. "Daniel’s entire life was in those black drives. He’s probably sitting on the couch right now, crying into his lukewarm coffee, wondering which spreadsheet he messed up."
Grant smirked, though his eyes remained glued to the screen. "Your husband is an ant, Allison. A worker bee. Men like him exist to build engines for men like me to drive."
Allison laughed, remembering Daniel’s pathetic, strained voice over the receiver last night. *“Put my wife on.”* It had been so desperate, so thoroughly crushed. She had felt a thrill of cruel power. For eight years, she had felt trapped in his predictable, structured world where everything was budgeted, scheduled, and planned. Grant was chaos, money, and danger.
"Order breakfast," Grant commanded casually, tossing his black American Express Centurion card onto the bed. "Beluga caviar, poached eggs, and another bottle of Dom Pérignon. We leave for the airfield in an hour."
Allison picked up the suite’s landline and called room service, placing an extravagant order totaling nearly four thousand dollars.
"And charge it to the room, please," she added sweetly.
"I apologize, Mrs. Mercer," the concierge's voice sounded strained over the line. "There seems to be an issue."
Allison’s brow furrowed. "An issue?"
"The credit facility on file for this suite—the Mercer Distribution Corporate Executive card—was flagged for major unauthorized activity at 1:15 AM. The card issuer has instituted an immediate freeze and filed a dispute for all charges incurred over the last twenty-four hours."
Allison’s stomach gave a slight, sickening drop. "That’s absurd. I’m the authorized user. Just run this card instead." She read off the numbers from Grant’s black card.
"One moment, madam." A pause stretched for twenty seconds, each beat of the clock sounding unnaturally loud. "Madam, this card has also been declined. The transaction processing network has locked all accounts tied to Vance Capital Holdings under an administrative lien."
Allison lowered the receiver slowly. "Grant..."
Grant glanced up from his tablet, his expression suddenly tight. "What?"
"The cards are dead."
Grant scowled, tossing his espresso cup onto the saucer with a clatter. "That's impossible. Daniel doesn't have the authority to freeze Vance Capital’s commercial accounts. He’s a mid-level operations director!"
Before Allison could speak, the electronic lock on the presidential suite’s double doors chirped.
The door didn't open with a polite knock from room service. It swung open hard, slamming against the interior wall stopper.
Standing in the entryway was not Daniel.
It was four men in dark windbreakers with yellow block lettering across their backs: **FBI**. Behind them stood two uniformed officers from the St. Louis Police Department, accompanied by Mercer Distribution’s chief of corporate security.

"Grant Vance? Allison Mercer?" the lead agent announced, stepping forward with his badge extended. "Federal agents. Step away from the luggage and put your hands where we can see them."
