Chapter 8 - Reading the Fine Print

Daniel stared down at the bold lettering on the cover of the folder, his hands trembling slightly as the morning breeze rustled the papers inside. Renee rushed down the stairs, practically tripping over her own slippers, her face pale with dread.
“Daniel? What is that? What’s going on?” she demanded, her voice rising in panic.
With slow, hesitant fingers, Daniel pulled out the primary document and began scanning the legal jargon. As his eyes tracked across the paragraphs, all the blood drained from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white. It wasn't a standard lawsuit; it was a formal notice of cessation, property injunctions, and financial audits tied directly to the household expenses, utility contributions, and legal boundaries established by Margaret’s newly formed estate trust. Furthermore, it detailed a strict legal notice regarding harassment, elder financial exploitation, and the immediate revocation of any future familial reliance on Margaret Briggs.
Daniel looked up slowly from the papers, his eyes wide with sheer disbelief, and stared straight up the staircase. Standing on the landing, bathed in the morning light, was Margaret. She wasn't the timid, invisible mother who had quietly passed the dinner rolls just days ago. She looked like a queen surveying her kingdom from a fortress of absolute independence.

“Mom...” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. “What... what is this?”
Margaret tilted her head slightly, her expression cool and collected. “It’s just some paperwork, Daniel. You wanted me to move out, didn’t you? Consider this my formal 30-day notice of permanent departure—effective immediately.”
