Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Visitor at the Front Door

Before Renee could muster another word or demand an explanation, the front doorbell chimed loudly through the house. The sharp, authoritative ring echoed across the hardwood floors below.

Downstairs, Daniel—still barefoot and wearing Sunday lounge pants—scrambled hastily toward the foyer, assuming it was a package delivery or a neighbor. Renee stood frozen in Margaret’s doorway, her breathing shallow, her mind racing to connect the impossible dots. Margaret calmly stood up from her chair, smoothing down the lapel of her gray blazer, and walked gracefully out of the room, motioning for Renee to follow her down the stairs.

Peering over the wrought-iron railing of the second-floor landing, Daniel pulled open the heavy front door. Standing on the porch was a tall, sharp-dressed man holding a thick corporate folder emblazoned with a prominent legal firm's logo and Renee’s full name across the front cover.

“Mr. Daniel Briggs?” the courier asked in a crisp, professional tone.

“Yes? Can I help you?” Daniel asked, frowning in confusion.

“You’ve been officially served. This requires your immediate attention.” The courier handed the heavy folder directly into Daniel’s chest, turned on his heel, and walked down the steps, leaving Daniel standing in the doorway holding a legal document that would completely dismantle his comfortable, arrogant world.
