Chapter 5 - The Sudden Shift in the Household

Back at Daniel’s house, a strange and frantic psychological shift began to take place over the weekend. The moment Margaret returned from finalizing her real estate paperwork, she noticed an abrupt change in the atmosphere. The cold indifference that had defined her daily existence vanished overnight, replaced by an awkward, transparent wave of forced hospitality.
Renee, who hadn't cooked a breakfast for Margaret in two years, suddenly appeared at the kitchen island on Saturday morning, holding a steaming plate of eggs and bacon. “Good morning, Margaret! I thought you might want a hot breakfast today,” she chirped, forcing a tight, unnatural smile.

Daniel materialized moments later, practically tripping over himself to be helpful. “Hey Mom, how did you sleep? Let me know if you need anything adjusted in your room. Honestly, take your time packing; there’s no rush for you to move out quite yet.” Even the grandchildren were suddenly nudged by their parents to spend hours chatting in Margaret’s bedroom, showering her with uncharacteristic affection and hugs.
Margaret smiled faintly, keeping her cards close to her chest. Kindness that appears out of nowhere overnight always has an ugly, selfish motivation behind it. They hadn't suddenly grown a conscience; they had simply realized that alienating the free live-in nanny and housekeeper might make their daily domestic routine much harder. Little did they know, their golden goose had already flown the coop, and the trap was about to snap shut.
