Chapter 6 - The Brass Key Discovery

Saturday morning arrived with bright Scottsdale sunlight spilling through the windows. Margaret was sitting quietly at her desk, organizing a stack of financial documents beside her Bible. Tucked neatly underneath the leather cover was the brass key to her new estate, with its distinct engraved keychain glinting slightly in the light.

Unannounced and uninvited, Renee burst through Margaret’s bedroom door without even bothering to knock, carrying a pile of freshly washed laundry. Her eyes darted aggressively around the room, instantly locking onto the corner of the envelope peeking out from beneath the Bible. Before Margaret could react, Renee lunged forward and pulled the envelope slightly, revealing the brass house key and a formal title document bearing Margaret’s maiden name and a Scottsdale property address.

Renee froze. Her face drained of all color. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water as her eyes darted from the key to the official document, and finally to Margaret’s calm, unblinking gaze.

“You... you bought a house?” Renee stammered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock, confusion, and sudden, mounting panic.

Margaret slowly placed her palm flat over the key, covering it completely, and looked up at her daughter-in-law with a chilling, serene smile that spoke volumes.
