Chapter 33 - The Midnight Ambush on Lake Geneva

Midnight settled heavily over Lake Geneva, casting shimmering, ghostly reflections of the city lights across the dark, frigid water.

Claire’s rented lakeside villa—a secluded historical estate surrounded by manicured French gardens and stone perimeter walls—stood in profound silence. Inside her private study, Claire sat before her secure terminal, analyzing the corporate registry data Natalie had forwarded from New York regarding Helvetia Holdings.

The data confirmed her worst suspicions: Viktor Sterling had inherited the remnants of Project Janus and was quietly weaponizing European banking laws to enact a hostile takeover of Whitmore Europe.

Suddenly, the ambient smart-home lighting flickered and died, plunging the study into absolute darkness.

Claire didn't flinch. Years of surviving corporate warfare had trained her reflexes for moments exactly like this. She silently slid out of her ergonomic leather chair, stepping into the deep shadows near floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, her hand resting firmly on the grip of her compact sidearm.

Click.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the study unlatched with a pneumatic hiss. Two masked mercenaries stepped silently into the room, their suppressed tactical rifles scanning the darkness with thermal scopes.

"Target is not at the desk," one operative hissed in German, signaling to his partner.

Before they could adjust their positions, the window behind them shattered inward as a titanium walking cane smashed through the reinforced glass. Arthur Vance vaulted onto the balcony with astonishing speed, driving his boot squarely into the first mercenary's chest and sending him crashing hard onto the hardwood floor.

The second operative whipped his rifle around, but Claire was already moving. Emerging from the shadows, she delivered a devastating, precise palm strike to the mercenary's wrist, dislodging his weapon before sweeping his legs out from under him with ruthless efficiency.

Within twenty seconds, both intruders were pinned to the floor, disarmed and neutralized.

Arthur stepped over the groaning operative, looking toward Claire with a proud, approving smirk. "Your form is improving, Chairwoman."

Claire lowered her weapon, her breathing steady and controlled. "They aren't sending messages anymore, Arthur. They're getting desperate. Which means we hit Viktor Sterling before sunrise."
