Chapter 21 - Whispers in the Dark

The midnight air over Westchester County felt electric, vibrating with the silent tension of a chess match played on a global scale. In the private study of Arthur Vance’s Manhattan residence, the amber glow of a desk lamp cast long shadows across scattered dossiers and encrypted communiques.
Arthur sat behind his mahogany desk, his weathered fingers steepled as he reviewed the latest surveillance logs regarding the remnants of Project Janus. Though Grant Whitmore was locked away in a maximum-security penitentiary and Julian Vance was cooling his heels in federal holding, the Hydra-like tendrils of their corporate conspiracy had not completely withered.
The encrypted hard drive recovered from the Chapel Hill Estate had proven to be a Pandora's box of offshore numbered accounts, shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, and encrypted ledger entries detailing a web of industrial espionage.
A sharp, discreet knock interrupted his thoughts. The heavy oak door swung open to reveal Natalie, her sharp eyes scanning the room before she stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind her. Her demeanor was tightly wound, a stark contrast to her usual polished composure.
"We have a problem, Arthur," Natalie said without preamble, leaning against the edge of the desk. "The federal indictment against Grant was supposed to be airtight, but our compliance algorithms flagged an anomalous wire transfer originating from a dormant subsidiary in Zurich. Someone is attempting to liquidate the remaining assets of the Janus syndicate before the Department of Justice can freeze them."
Arthur’s gaze narrowed, his eyes flashing with cold calculation. "Who?"
"That’s the terrifying part," Natalie murmured, sliding a secure tablet across the polished wood. "It’s not one of Grant’s old lieutenants. It’s a phantom entity operating under a cryptographic signature we haven't seen since the late nineties—a ghost known within intelligence circles as The Vanguard Group."

Arthur leaned forward, the ambient light catching the grim set of his jaw. "They aren't just trying to recover lost money, Natalie. They're trying to reclaim the data we locked away. Claire and little Clara are still scheduled to fly to Paris next week. If these people think we have the complete decoder ring for Project Janus, they will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat."
"Then we have to strike first," Natalie countered, her voice laced with iron resolve. "We can't wait for them to make a move on Claire. We need to draw them out into the open."
