Chapter 31 - The Freefall of No Return

The air in the grand ballroom evacuated in a single, deafening gasp.

Arthur’s boots slammed against the edge of the mezzanine railing.

His fingers clawed wildly at the empty space where Clara had stood only a heartbeat before.

Below them, three hundred masked elites in silk and diamonds looked up just in time to see the glitter of falling platinum.

The diamond pendant tumbled through the smoky beams of the chandelier light.

It turned end over end, sparkling like a teardrop carved from pure ice.

Clara was falling backward right behind it, her midnight-blue silk gown billowing around her like the wings of a dying bird.

She wasn't screaming.

Her eyes remained locked onto Arthur's face with a calm, terrifying serenity.

"Arthur!" someone screamed from the doorway behind him.

The tactical unit opened fire.

Suppressors hissed violently in the vaulted ceiling, chewing into the gilded plaster above Arthur’s head.

He didn't duck.

He didn't draw his weapon.

Arthur threw his entire body over the polished brass railing.

The drop was thirty-five feet into the center of the marble auction pit.

Gravity caught him by the collar, dragging him down through the freezing drafts of the auditorium.

He reached out with everything he had left in his shattered body.

His fingers clamped around Clara’s wrist.

The violent jolt dislocated his shoulder with a sickening pop that echoed in his skull.

Clara swung beneath him like a pendulum over the sea of panicked billionaires.

"Let go!" she shouted over the rising wail of emergency sirens. "The fail-safe is already armed!"

Below them, the diamond pendant hit the polished black marble floor.

It did not shatter.

The impact triggered a micro-charge embedded inside the platinum casing.

A blinding pulse of blue-white light flared outward in an expanding ring of concussive force.

The marble floor didn't just crack. It disintegrated.

The bedrock foundation beneath the historic ballroom groaned like a dying beast before caving into the dark abyss below.

Screams tore through the hall as entire tables of Champagne flutes, caviar displays, and masked socialites plunged into the opening void.

Arthur looked down into the black chasm opening directly beneath their dangling feet.

"I told you," Arthur grunted through clenched teeth, blood dripping from his split lip onto her cheek. "I’m not letting you die alone."

"You idiot," Clara whispered, her grip suddenly tightening on his forearm. "You were supposed to save yourself."

Above them, the brass railing gave way under their combined weight.

May you like

The metal snapped with the screech of tearing steel.

Together, locked in each other's grip, they plummeted straight down into the smoking darkness beneath Manhattan.
