Chapter 22 - Blood on the Hudson

Rain lashed against the rusted steel hull of the tugboat drifting near the Brooklyn piers.
Arthur stood in the shadow of the wheelhouse, binoculars pressed to his eyes.
Across the choppy black water, the private heliport at the edge of the river was alight with silent activity.
Black SUVs idled in a perfect perimeter around a pristine corporate helicopter.
"That's Vance's private extraction," Evelyn muttered, leaning against the damp railing beside him.
She was wrapping a fresh roll of gauze around her forearm, her knuckles bloody and raw.
"And Clara?" Arthur asked, lowering the lenses.
"If she has the master encryption key, she doesn't need Vance anymore," Evelyn replied coldly.
"Vance knows that too," Arthur said. "He’s a hired predator. He doesn't let marks walk away with the prize."
Through the mist, a lone figure stepped out of the lead vehicle onto the tarmac.
She wore a charcoal trench coat over the remnants of her silk gown, her hair tied back in an effortless knot.
Even in the driving storm, Clara moved with the grace of royalty.
Beside her, Vance emerged, speaking aggressively, his hands gesturing toward the open hatch of the aircraft.
Arthur watched Clara pause on the rain-slicked concrete.
She didn't raise her voice.
She simply withdrew a slim metallic device from her pocket and held it between two fingers.
Vance froze instantly.
Arthur adjusted the focus on his binoculars, zooming in on the object in her hand.
It was the cryogenic cylinder from the Hawthorne family vault—the genetic ledger containing every illegal offshore bond.
"She’s blackmailing the fixer," Arthur muttered.
"Or she's delivering him," Evelyn said, tapping his shoulder and pointing upstream.
From the dark curve of the East River, three unmarked tactical harbor patrol boats cut their engines, gliding silently through the fog.
They weren't NYPD.
The insignias were dark gray, bearing the stylized crest of the Syndicate Vance had claimed to serve.
"It's an ambush," Arthur realized aloud. "Vance isn't extracting her. He's cornering her."
A single shot rang out across the water, barely muffled by the river wind.
Vance stepped back as a red rose bloomed on the shoulder of Clara’s trench coat.
She stumbled against the helicopter landing strut, her knees buckling onto the asphalt.
"Clara!" The name ripped from Arthur’s throat before he could stop himself.
"Arthur, stay down!" Evelyn hissed, grabbing his shoulder as he moved to the gangway.
Clara didn't scream or beg.
Even on one knee in the pouring rain, she looked directly across the dark river.
She didn't look at Vance or the heavily armed commandos disembarking from the gunboats.
She turned her face straight toward the rusted tugboat hiding in the pier shadows.
As if she knew he was there all along.
With trembling fingers, Clara raised her right hand and clicked the slim cylinder against the tarmac.
A blinding flash of magnesium flare engulfed the heliport in white-hot incandescence.
Gunfire erupted across the landing pad, automatic rifles tearing through the fuel tanks of the idling SUVs.
"We have to move!" Arthur yelled, disengaging the safety of his rifle.

"Into a warzone?" Evelyn yelled back. "She's using herself as bait!"
"She's not bait," Arthur said, jumping across the narrow gap to the wooden dock. "She's the executioner."
