Chapter 30 - The Second Veil

The LED pulsed with a steady, rhythmic cadence—one beat per second.

Arthur stared at the device, the cold sweat breaking out across his collar.

"A dead-man's switch," Arthur whispered, his throat tightening.

"Thirty-two charges," Clara confirmed, her voice barely a murmur. "Planted in the support columns directly beneath this ballroom."

"There are four hundred innocent people down there!" Arthur hissed, glancing at the laughing crowd below.

"Innocent?" Clara laughed softly, a sound filled with bitter glass. "Look at them, Arthur."

She pointed a slender finger over the marble railing.

"The man in the gold mask owns the shipping line that trafficked Sarah’s family," she said.

"The woman in emeralds signed the demolition permits that buried the dockworkers alive."

"The judge at table four accepted two million to seal my mother's murder records."

"They aren't innocent, Arthur. They are the market."

The auctioneer’s gavel banged on the podium below.

"Sold! To the gentleman from Geneva!"

Clara held the diamond pendant out between them, dangling it by its platinum chain over the two-story drop to the marble floor.

"If I drop this," she said, her eyes boring into his, "the foundations collapse. The entire room drops seventy feet into the bedrock."

"And if you don't?" Arthur asked, his hand trembling on the concealed weapon.

"If you shoot me, my fingers open," she said softly. "The switch triggers automatically."

"You die either way," Arthur said.

"I died the day you put that ring on my finger, Arthur," she replied, her voice breaking with genuine, raw pain.

"I died the day I realized I actually loved you."

Arthur froze, the words hitting him with the force of a bullet.

"Clara..."

She stepped backward toward the edge of the mezzanine, her heels clicking on the polished marble.

"You have one shot, Arthur," she whispered, her eyes filling with tears that caught the chandelier light.

"You can take my hand and walk out of this city forever. Let them burn in the fire they built."

"Or you can save them," she continued, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "And shoot the only woman who ever saw the truth in your eyes."

Arthur looked at the crowd below, then back at the woman he had loved, hated, and hunted.

Behind them, the heavy double doors of the mezzanine burst open.

A tactical team in black armor flooded the landing, their laser sights cutting through the smoky light, locking onto Clara’s chest.

"Drop the device!" a voice bellowed through an amplifier.

Clara looked at the lasers painting her midnight gown with crimson dots.

She looked back at Arthur, a heartbreaking smile touching her lips.

"Catch me, Arthur," she whispered.

She opened her fingers.

May you like

The diamond plummeted toward the marble floor below.

Arthur lunged forward, his hand tearing through the empty air as the world fell into slow, suffocating motion.
