Chapter 18 - The Face of the Dynasty

"Julian Whitmore," Daniel spat, his finger tightening on the trigger, his whole body shaking with adrenaline and rage.
"Uncle Julian, if we’re being familial," the man replied, adjusting Sophie in his arms with chilling gentleness. He patted her back as she sobbed hysterically. "Hush now, little one. The Sterling chapter is closing. You are coming home to the family that built this century."
"Let her go, Julian! She’s three years old! She has nothing to do with your sick biotech trials!"
"She is the *culmination* of them, Daniel," Julian said, taking a slow step toward the stone steps that led down to a private boat dock, where the twin outboards of a high-speed Zodiac boat were idling in the dark water. "Your late wife—God rest her obstinate soul—discovered our research, but she didn't understand the economics. The Whitmore family is dying. My sons, my cousins, our board of directors... we are all carrying the degenerative neuro-decay that Arthur failed to cure in himself."
Julian looked down at Sophie with an expression of cold, predatory hunger.
"Evelyn kept you hidden out here in the Pacific Northwest like a prize pig, bleeding our foundation dry to keep Arthur on a ventilator so you could live your quaint, suburban life. When she realized Clara was going to expose the whole arrangement to the authorities, Evelyn did what any matriarch would do: she eliminated the threat."
"Evelyn pushed Sophie down the stairs!" Daniel yelled, tears mixing with the rain on his cheeks. "She tried to kill my child!"
"No," Julian smiled faintly, shaking his head. "Evelyn knew that if the state took Sophie or if she was severely injured, the mandatory medical intake would flag her blood work in the state database. Evelyn was trying to disable the child’s commercial value to keep me from claiming her. A clumsy, desperate move from an aging woman whose empire was collapsing."
Julian signaled to the two tactical operators flanking him. They raised their weapons, red laser dots painting the center of Daniel’s chest.
"You have two choices, Daniel," Julian said, his voice dropping to a quiet, razor-sharp whisper. "You drop the weapon and come with us to Zurich. You can watch your daughter live in luxury while our medical team synthesizes the stabilized vector from her bone marrow. Or, you pull that trigger, my men put six rounds through your heart, and Sophie grows up in an alpine laboratory without ever remembering your face."
"Dada!" Sophie shrieked, reaching out a tiny hand toward him. "Dada, hold me!"
The sight of Clara’s bronze plaque, sitting just inches from Julian’s polished leather shoes, caught Daniel’s eye in the gloom.
