Chapter 15 - The Glass Divide

The visitation booth at Gig Harbor smelled of commercial bleach and despair.

Evelyn Sterling sat on the other side of the thick bulletproof glass, wearing an orange scrub top that hung loosely over her sunken collarbones. Her manicured blonde bob was gone, replaced by stringy, unwashed graying hair pinned haphazardly behind her ears. But her eyes—cold, pale blue, and burning with a toxic, unyielding intellect—remained terrifyingly sharp.

She picked up the heavy black receiver. Daniel lifted his on the visitor side.

"You look exhausted, Daniel," Evelyn said, her voice crackling through the cheap speaker. A ghost of a cruel smile touched her dry lips. "Fatherhood suits you, but paranoia does not."

"Who was outside my house yesterday, Evelyn?" Daniel asked, leaning forward, pressing his palm flat against the cold glass. "Who left the note on Sophie’s window?"

Evelyn didn't blink. The smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, terrifying pity.

"So, you opened Box 714," she whispered.

"Tell me who they are, or I swear to God I will dismantle every foundation, every building, and every brick that ever bore the Sterling name."

"You naive little boy," Evelyn hissed, leaning closer until her breath fogged the glass. "You think you defeated me? You didn't defeat me, Daniel. You cut the brake lines on an eighteen-wheeler going down a mountain! For twenty-six years, I held that ravenous pack of wolves at bay! I built a billion-dollar shipping empire out of thin air just to pay the hush money and keep Arthur’s machines humming!"

"Arthur," Daniel spat. "The man you experimented on me with!"

"Arthur experimented on *himself* first!" Evelyn snarled, her knuckles whitening on the receiver. "He was brilliant, Daniel. More brilliant than you could ever comprehend. But the Whitmore gene carries a degenerative dementia that strikes before age forty. He synthesized a viral vector to stop it. He gave it to you when you were an infant because you were showing the early markers. You survived. He didn't."

Daniel felt the air vanish from his lungs. "What?"

"The vector mutated inside Arthur's brain. It put him into a catatonic coma. But your blood—your blood synthesized the antibodies. And Sophie has Clara’s clean genome, which means her cellular makeup is the only working template that can cure the rest of the Whitmore dynasty."

She banged the receiver against the glass, her eyes wide with madness.

"My brother, Julian Whitmore, has been tracking you for years! The moment that judge slammed her gavel and sent me here, the protective trust dissolved! Julian doesn't want Sophie dead, Daniel. He wants her in a laboratory in Zurich for the rest of her life!"

"I won't let them touch her," Daniel growled, tears of pure fury burning his eyes.

"You can't stop Julian," Evelyn laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "He's already inside your perimeter, Daniel. Look at your phone."
