Chapter 16 - The Ambush on the Bluff

Daniel sprinted through the prison parking lot, tearing his phone from his jacket pocket.
Three missed calls from Mateo.
One text message, received two minutes ago:
*DANIEL THEY BREACHED THE GATE. TWO SUVS. BLACK GEAR. I HAVE SOPHIE IN THE SAFE ROOM UNDER THE PANTRY. CALL THE POLICE NOW.*
"No, no, no!" Daniel slammed his hand against the steering wheel as the Audi’s twin-turbo engine roared to life, gravel spewing from the tires as he shot out onto the highway toward the Narrows Bridge.
He dialed 911 on hands-free.
"Kitsap County 911, what is your emergency?"
"This is Daniel Sterling! My residence at 4400 Point No Point Road is under armed attack! Men in tactical gear are breaching the house! My three-year-old daughter and brother-in-law are inside! Send every unit you have!"
"Sir, we’re dispatching units now, but ETA to that peninsula location is twelve to fourteen minutes—"
Daniel dropped the phone onto the passenger seat and floored the accelerator, the speedometer climbing past 105 mph through the drenching coastal rain.
Twelve minutes. In twelve minutes, a trained private military contractor could breach a civilian home, neutralize an occupant, and extract a toddler by helicopter.
Through the streaming windshield, Daniel saw the gray waters of the inlet whipping into whitecaps. The sky was bruising into a violent purple twilight.
By the time Daniel rounded the final hairpin turn onto his private road, the iron security gate had been sheared off its hinges, crushed flat against the mud. Heavy tire ruts tore through his manicured lawn.
Up ahead, the house stood silhouetted against the dark water.
The front bay window was completely blown out, shards of glass gleaming on the porch. Smoke—thick, white tactical smoke—was billowing from the open front door.
A gunshot echoed through the trees. The distinctive, booming thunder of Mateo’s 12-gauge.
Then, a second shot.
And then, silence.
Daniel slammed the Audi into the side of an unmarked black Cadillac Escalade idling in his driveway, the impact deploying his airbags with a deafening pop. Daniel kicked his door open, blood dripping from his nose, Clara’s heavy steel tire iron clutched in his right hand.

"SOPHIE!" he screamed, stumbling through the smoke-filled doorway into the house.
