Chapter 6 - The Ghost Protocol

The tactical staging room inside the secure federal bunker beneath Fort Meade was bathed in the cold, blue glow of dozens of high-definition monitors. Satellite feeds displayed a sprawling, heavily fortified industrial complex on the outskirts of the city—Vanguard Dynamics headquarters.

General Carter stood at the head of the briefing table, leaning over a three-dimensional holographic map of the facility.

"We have confirmation," Carter said, pointing a laser marker at a subterranean basement level on the hologram. "Vanguard's leadership is currently scrubbing their servers. Furthermore, intercept traffic shows they are aware the FBI is closing in. They've rigged the primary lobby with remote-detonated explosives."

I stood across from him, checking the magazine of my suppressed HK416 rifle, sliding each round into place with practiced, mechanical precision.

"And my brother's platoon?" I asked without looking up.

"NAVWAR command scheduled their security detail for 0800 hours," Carter replied grimly. "If Daniel and his team walk through that front gate ten minutes from now, they'll trigger the perimeter tripwires, and Thorne's mercenaries will massacre them."

I snapped my rifle bolt forward, chambering a round, and clipped my tactical harness over my black operational vest. "Then we don't have time to wait for standard authorization. I'm going in now."

"Agent Hayes," Carter cautioned, stepping into my path. "You're going in solo. Our strike teams are twenty minutes out. That compound is crawling with at least forty heavily armed private contractors."

"Good," I muttered, adjusting my night-vision goggles over my forehead. "That means I won't have to worry about missing any of them."

Ten minutes later, a stealth transport helicopter dropped me into the tree line three hundred yards behind the Vanguard compound. The night air was freezing, but inside my tactical suit, my adrenaline kept my senses razor-sharp.

I moved through the perimeter fence like a ghost, slipping past automated thermal cameras by utilizing a localized radar-jamming device.

As I reached the rear service entrance of the main building, my secure comms crackled to life.

“Agent Hayes, this is Overwatch. Warning: SEAL Team Four has just arrived at the front gates. They are attempting to breach the main lobby.”

My heart skipped a beat. Idiot.

"Daniel, abort!" I hissed into the open tactical frequency, switching to the unsecured tactical radio band his platoon was using. "Daniel, do you copy? The lobby is mined! Fall back immediately!"

Static hissed through my earpiece, followed by Daniel’s voice—breathless, arrogant, and terrified all at once.

"Who is this? Identify on the tactical channel!"

"It's Samantha, you arrogant fool! Get your men out of that lobby right now or you're all dead!"

"Shut up!" Daniel yelled back over the sound of shouting men and sirens. "We have our orders! We are securing this building for national security—"

BOOM.

A massive, earth-shattering explosion ripped through the front of the compound. The shock wave rattled the glass of the rear service doors where I stood.

"Daniel!" I screamed into the mic.

Silence. Only the crackle of burning debris and distant gunfire.
