Chapter 5 - The Bitter Pill

The chaos on the porch came to a grinding halt as my words settled over the group like a physical weight.
My mother burst into tears, dropping her hands to her face. "Robert... tell me she's lying. Please tell me our family isn't mixed up in treason. Daniel is a war hero—he just graduated today!"
Robert Hayes looked like he had aged ten years in the span of sixty seconds. The proud, unyielding posture of the retired captain completely collapsed. He stared at the tablet screen in my hand, recognizing the official Department of Defense cryptographic seals stamped across the top of the classified files.
"You... you knew," Robert whispered, his voice trembling as he looked up at me. "All these years... when everyone thought you were a failure... you were working for them?"
"I was working for a country that you only pretend to serve, Captain," I replied, using his military title with deliberate detachment. "You cared more about rank, medals, and keeping up appearances than actual service. While you were basking in Daniel's reflected glory, I was stopping biological weapons from crossing our borders and neutralizing sleeper cells in the Balkans."
Daniel stepped forward, his face flushed with wounded pride and desperate denial. "Shut up! You're just making this up because you couldn't cut it! You're jealous because I made it through BUD/S! I earned my Trident! My platoon is elite—we can handle any threat!"
I looked at my brother with genuine pity. He had spent his whole life inside a controlled, sanitized training pipeline, believing that passing a brutal selection course made him invincible. He had no idea how the real world worked outside the pristine walls of Coronado.
"Your platoon is walking into a building rigged with C4 explosives, Daniel," I said sharply. "Vanguard Dynamics isn't hosting a corporate gala tomorrow. They're staging an extraction of classified servers before federal indictments hit. Marcus Thorne has a private mercenary army waiting inside that facility. If you and your men walk through those doors tomorrow morning without federal backup, you won't make it out alive."
"You're lying!" Daniel shouted, lunging forward, though an FBI agent immediately stepped between us, hand resting on his service weapon. "You just want to steal my moment! You couldn't hack the Navy, so you're trying to destroy my career!"

"Enough, Daniel!" Robert roared, his voice finally regaining a fraction of its old authority, though it was laced with utter defeat. He looked at me, his eyes pleading for the first time in his life. "Samantha... if what you're saying is true... how do we stop it?"
"You don't," I said, turning away and walking back toward the Suburban. "That's my job now."
