Chapter 4 - The Unraveling at the Estate

The Hayes family estate in Annapolis was usually a shrine to naval tradition, adorned with polished brass bells, framed certificates of discharge, and American flags snapping crisp in the coastal breeze.
Today, it looked like a crime scene.
Two federal black vans blocked the circular driveway. Agents in dark tactical gear and windbreakers marked FBI - COUNTERINTELLIGENCE swarmed the front lawn, carrying heavy Pelican cases and cardboard storage boxes out of the front doors.
My father stood on the front porch, his face purple with rage, shouting at an agent holding a federal warrant.
"This is an outrage!" Robert roared, his voice cracking with righteous indignation. "I am a retired Navy Captain! I served this country for thirty-five years! You cannot just storm my home without a congressional override!"
"Step back, Captain," the lead agent replied coldly, not even flinching at the old man's threats. "Your clearance has been revoked under executive order. Your primary financial accounts are tied directly to Vanguard Dynamics slush funds."
Daniel and his mother stood near the steps, looking entirely lost. Daniel was still dressed in his white dress uniform, the gold Trident mocking the utter chaos unraveling around them.
"Dad, what is going on?" Daniel demanded, grabbing his father's arm. "Why are federal agents tearing up the living room? My platoon commander is calling me—we have a high-priority VIP security detail with Vanguard tomorrow morning!"
Robert froze. The color drained from his face entirely as the name Vanguard hit him. "That... that's impossible. Vanguard is a legitimate defense contractor. I consulted for them. They build tactical hardware for the Navy!"
"They build black-market communications hardware for transnational cartels," a calm, chillingly familiar voice cut through the noise.
Everyone turned.
The unmarked Suburban pulled up smoothly to the curb. I stepped out, wearing my simple gray blazer and dark sunglasses, holding an encrypted tablet in my hand.
Daniel glared at me, his eyes burning with absolute fury. "You! What are you doing here? Did you bring these federal thugs to our house? Are you trying to ruin our family completely?"
My father turned his gaze toward me, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock, fury, and a terrifying dawning realization. "Samantha... what is the meaning of this? You call yourself an agent—did you do this?"
I walked slowly up the stone steps, stopping just a foot away from my father and my brother. I didn't look like the broken dropout they had mocked an hour ago. I looked like an apex predator in civilian clothes.
"Dad," I said softly, "you spent twelve years telling everyone that I couldn't handle the pressure. You told every neighbor, every relative, and every officer that I washed out because I was weak."
I tapped the screen of my tablet, bringing up a secure corporate flowchart that mapped out Vanguard Dynamics' illegal subsidiaries.
"The truth is, I left BUD/S because the DIA recruited me to hunt down the exact treasonous network that has been paying your consulting fees for the last five years."
Robert staggered backward, his hand catching the wooden porch railing for support. "That's a lie... that's a damn lie!"
"Is it?" I asked, turning to look at my brother. "Hey, little brother. Did your commanding officer tell you who you're guarding tomorrow morning?"
Daniel swallowed hard, his voice faltering. "The... the CEO of Vanguard Dynamics. Marcus Thorne."
I smiled coldly. "Marcus Thorne isn't a defense CEO, Daniel. He's an international arms dealer. And your first official SEAL mission tomorrow isn't a security detail."

I held up my tablet, displaying a high-priority kill-or-capture warrant signed directly by the Secretary of Defense.
"It's a trap."
